The story so far-
Arsenal are the latest Premier League side set to rival Manchester United for AS Monaco midfielder Fabinho. Arsene Wenger has been reportedly interested in bringing the Brazilian to the Emirates and solidify his defensive midfield. With the likes of Arsenal having star attacking quality in the names of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott, there is often too much of a defensive burden on the sole defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka.
However, the French manager is a keen admirer of the Monaco man Fabinho as he was an integral member of a club that claimed the Ligue 1 title in France last season.
The 23 year old starlet has been on Jose Mourinho’s wish-list as well and Wenger is set to go head to head with his fiercest rival in terms of signing a key addition to his squad.
Fabinho has seen his stock price rise tremendously this season putting in many eye-catching performances in the league at the base of Monaco’s midfield.
The player’s main attributes, apart from his silky passing to create the tempo of the game and his robust-tackling nature in breaking down opponents play are often overlooked by his versatility.
He brings a different dimension to his game when he can slot into a right back position and be equally effective higher up the pitch when deployed as a wing-back.
He had put in a lot of classy displays throughout the year and would seem to fit in well with a team that thrive on willing runners off the ball. Fabinho not only scored 10 vital goals in a stellar season but also bagged up four assists over the course of 12 months.
There has been heavy news linking him to PSG but Monaco are unwilling to sell him to a direct rival in the league so the two English clubs stand a good chance of signing their target.
However, it should be interesting to see which club manages to attract Fabinho in ways they are able to make transfer negotiations with Monaco, because the club has already lost a few star players and are likely going to be the shopping hub in the coming few months.
Wenger is already preparing to splash out money on a few players so he can build a quad for the season in which the north London club could focus solely on the League and domestic cups after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
It is reported that Monaco had initially rejected a bit priced at £ 40 million for Fabinho by Manchester United, so it may give the clubs some thoughts to ponder over how much more they would need to spend to secure Fabinho’s services.
Who needs him more?
On a personal note Arsenal need him more than United, as the Gunners have had a lot of problems at the back over the years. The Manchester based side have been solid defensively, though their front-line has been the main problem and the inability to score goals in the post Sir Alex era. Hopefully, the signing of Lukaku can change that.
