How it happened?
As per a few British media outlets back then, Wayne Rooney was considering to leave the Red Devils this summer, after enjoying a brilliant 13 years at the the Old Trafford. He wanted to move away from Old Trafford, one of the main reasons for his departure was said to be a fall out with the manager, Jose Mourhino.
The English captain had previously stated that he would leave Manchester United, only for his boyhood club Everton and no other side that wanted to sign him.
Rooney last season had only managed to make 25 appearances in the Premier League and contributed by scoring just 5 goals.
Rooney entered into the last 12 months of his current contract with Manchester United and a few sources close to the Merseyside club had stated back then that it was very much likely that he would return to the club he made his debut in the top flight of English football with, 15 years ago.
The rumours had suggested that if at all Rooney was to leave The Theatre of Dreams, it would have been for the Toffees and would walk right into the starting line-up for Ronald Koeman’s side.
After a brilliant career with Manchester United having won every major trophy with them. Rooney has won the premier league 5 times, he also won a UEFA Champions league.
He has won the FA Community Shield 4 times, won one FA Cup and has also won the EUROPA league. A true club legend.
Was selling him a mistake though?
If you have been hiding in a cave or do not know what is going around in the world of football, I would just like to inform you that Rooney has already scored his first goal for Everton, in the debut of his second stint with them. The attacker took a shot from 30 yards and beat the keeper with ease.
The goal came against Gor Mahia, as the English side beat their rivals 2-1, in their first pre-season friendly. Looking at the goal and the way that he scored it, one can only look at it and wonder, whether it was a mistake on Mourinho’s part to let him go.
Can he be the one that revives Everton in the league and helps them finally win something under Koeman? Well, at least with him in the side, it seems that their team looks more balanced and can pose a threat to their opponents.
The goal that he just scored would seem to suggest that and this transfer might come back to haunt the Red Devils, in the days to come. Hopefully, Mourinho gets the right combination in his attack and it doesn’t really matter when the reason starts.
The Portuguese manager does have the money and the influence to get a few more top players into the team and with the right kind of stars in the side, will want to win more titles in the days to come.
Champions League football will be the main confidence booster, something that clubs like Arsenal won’t have this season. Like our page for more articles.
