The Major Problem-
There has been one aspect of football that has been utterly pathetic by Jurgen Klopp’s side since taking over the helm at Liverpool and it is yet to be fixed, The Defense. But after having brought in Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan last summer, Liverpool are still looking shaky at the back and the German boss is now ready to make a change in the goal-keeping department to solve the problems of leaking goals.
When Simon Mignolet first arrived at Merseyside four seasons ago in 2013, he made an incredible penalty save on the first day of the season which led many of the Anfield faithful to believe that he would be their new hero between the posts.
But the Belgian shot-stopper has had a very strange time over the past few seasons after making a few too many errors that have let Liverpool slip away from their wins which has drawn criticism from pundits to Mignolet. The question now that is put forward is if the 29 year old is good enough to remain at the club as the number one keeper for the future.
Klopp also brought in German keeper Loris Karius from FC Mainz but the 24 year old has not been able to cement himself in Liverpool’s first team after conceding too many errors between the sticks. It has now become a serious cause of concern for Liverpool over the past few years and has been a big problem when they are conceding goals rather sloppily.
Common mistakes have led to the downfall of the club and points dropped have been significant this season. Recently, Liverpool conceded 4 goals away to Tottenham Hotspurs and 5 goals away to Manchester City which have raised questions about the last line of their defense.
Jurgen Klopp would certainly have to look into the winter transfer window for a new keeper as he seems frustrated by the lack of good keepers at his disposal. Despite defending his players from harsh criticism, the former Dortmund manager will know he has to assess the issue with his shot-stopper. Conceding 15 goals in five games is quite horrendous by any standards of football, let alone one of England’s most successful clubs.
The Merseyside club are looking to widen their keeping options by swooping in for Porto keeper Iker Casillas. The former Real Madrid star has been on Klopp’s radar and despite his age, he is still managing to perform at a high level but is being overshadowed by youngsters coming through the ranks. Would the former Spanish captain be the remedy to Klopp’s keeping worries?
Is It Too Late Already?
Well, if we look at the current standings in the top flight of English football, the gap between leaders Manchester City and the Kops is 12 points, which is a really huge gap to close down, though just 11 matches have been played thus far. The point is that the Citizens are looking unbeatable at the moment and it take something really special for them to lose a match or even draw, looking at the way that they are dominating matches.
