Is it a boon or a bane? Whatever, the football fans around the world term it, Jose Mourinho has extended his Manchester United contract which will keep him at the club until 2020. The Portuguese boss signed a new deal with the option that he could remain at Old Trafford for another year. His contract was initially set to expire in 2019, but he will remain at Old Trafford for a longer period of time.
There will be plenty of United fans who would be delighted with their club manager’s decision to remain at the club for a longer period of time as they believe that he is the man to take them forward to the next level. But there are also many fans who criticize the 55-year-old as they would want to see their club playing beautiful attacking football. Well, it’s difficult to get the best of both worlds, but we all know that Mourinho is a guy who manages to get the results and trophies at the end of the season.
Mourinho was the successor to former United manager Louis Van Gaal, who had won the FA Cup back in 2016 with Manchester United during the Dutchman’s time in charge. And Mourinho helped the club to an EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season at the helm.
And the manager was all smiles after signing a new deal with the most successful club in England. Mourinho stated, “I feel a privileged one to work with such a fantastic group of boys,”
“My initial contract was three years, we made now the decision to make it clear for everyone that it is not for three, it is for four or five, and who knows, more. We have set very high standards – winning three trophies in one season – but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for. We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United. I love my players and it is a pleasure to know that we are going to be together for at least the next three years.” He added it.
Also speaking ahead of the move for Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United, Mourinho was all praise for the Chilean forward. He mentioned that Alexis moved from a ‘fantastic club to a giant club’ and stated that he would be available for United’s fourth-round FA Cup tie against Yeovil on Friday.
If Mourinho does remain at United until his contract terminates, it will be the longest time he has been in charge of a football club in his managing career. The former Champions League winner with Inter Milan and Porto spent three years at Chelsea and Madrid before returning to Stamford Bridge for a second spell of two years.
Manchester United currently sits in second place in the Premier League 12 points behind local neighbors Manchester City. In the Spanish league, Mourinho has been the only one to beat City boss Pep Guardiola to a La Liga title and has also been termed as one of the greatest managers ever. Definitely a boon no?
