Chelsea’s transfer board may have just lost another supporter in the form of Marcos Alonso, as the left-back has reportedly taken a dig at the transfer policies for their loss at the hands of Barcelona. The Spaniard has backed his manager, Antonio Conte in terms of wrongful signings and arrivals at the club.
Marcos Alonso has been absolutely brilliant for Chelsea since his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina in 2016 for a fee of £24m, having helped Chelsea win the Premier League title in his debut season with the English giants. But things aren’t going so well ever since the League triumph and Chelsea now find themselves facing a battle to play in the Champions League next season.
However, Alonso, like Conte has believed that Chelsea’s problems lie deeper than just issues on the pitch. After Antonio Conte had publicly criticized his transfer board earlier this season by not allowing him to bring in the players he wanted, Alonso too took a swipe at the club’s chief negotiators.
Following elimination from the Champions League at the Camp Nou after a 3-0 loss against Barcelona, Alonso felt Chelsea’s lacking sufficient depth in the squad was the reason for the exit. In a post-match interview, the Spaniard spoke to Metro and stated, ‘It’s difficult as there are so many games this year and we have not got the deepest squad, maybe, and we have had new players this year. “
Although he had to focus on the next game and the next trophy that the Blues could win and added,” We can only look forward and start fighting for the fourth spot in the Champions League and try to win the FA Cup.” The 27-year-old has been one of Antonio Conte’s most consistent players in attack and defense taking full control of the left-hand side on the pitch.
Having been renowned to put the big European clubs out, Chelsea failed miserably this season and it may boil down to the sacking of Conte in the summer. Having won the Premier League in his first season in charge of the club the Italian set a very high standard which is not being met by the current performances. But even Conte has had issues with Chelsea transfers and is unhappy with the club’s business strategies.
Nemanja Matic, John Terry, Diego Costa and Michy Batshuayi have been four crucial players that Chelsea have let go off in the past two transfer windows but their replacements have been far from up to the mark. Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata, Davide Zappacosta, Danny Drinkwater and Olivier Giroud have had minimal impact on Chelsea’s progress so far.
I feel that Chelsea need to allow Conte to bring in the players that he wants because there are definite communication issues at Chelsea which is the main reason for their underwhelming campaign. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich must allow Conte a say in the transfers or else there is very little chance of the club moving forward and winning more trophies. Chelsea will face Leicester City in the quarter final of FA Cup.
