Double Deal Set To Go Through, Liverpool Fans Have Mixed Reactions?

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is ready to prepare contract extensions for Liverpool defenders Alberto Moreno and Ragnar Klavan. The defensive duo is reportedly set to remain at Anfield for a longer period of time even though they are not first choice players. Liverpool’s main problem for a long time has been their defensive worries, always fluent in attack but leaky at the back. This season too has been somewhat of a similar situation as the Reds have conceded a few too many goals and have been linked to bringing in a few quality defenders at the club. It seems that Klopp is content with the current men at his disposal and is keen on renewing his current defenders’ contracts.

Liverpool sold Brazilian superstar Philippe Coutinho for a club-record fee of £142 million to La Liga giants Barcelona but splashed out £75m of that to secure the services for Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton in the same January transfer window.

Although the Dutchman has been a colossal figure at the back for Liverpool, they have still leaked goals as Dejan Lovren has not been steady enough.

The face that Lovren is the first choice makes the prospect of the substitute defenders even more frightening for the Reds faithful.

According to reporter and journalist Paul Joyce, Liverpool are set to offer Klavan and Moreno extension deals.

Moreno arrived at Liverpool from La Liga side Sevilla back in 2014 with a heavy reputation of winning the Europa League for a fee of £12m on a five-year deal.

His performances for the Reds had been far from impressive literally costing those two finals in the Europa League and the League Cup during Klopp’s debut season in charge of the club.

With the emergence of Scottish left-back Andrew Robertson due to Moreno’s injury, the 24-year-old has cemented his spot in Liverpool’s first team although Moreno will look to earn his spot back next season. Which is why Liverpool are interested in offering a contract extension for the Spaniard.

Another defender who is being offered another few years at the Merseyside club is Estonian centre-back, Ragnar Klavan. The 32-year-old arrived from German club Augsburg back in 2016, and like Moreno, his contract with Liverpool ends next summer.

Klavan has been a solid back up for Jurgen Klopp when needed and has put in a shift whenever called upon.

The left-footed defender is also capable of playing on the left-hand side of the pitch if required and has added vital depth to Klopp’s team this season making 27 appearances in all competitions.

However, the duo, Moreno, and Klavan have been susceptible to common mistakes at the back which have affected Liverpool’s point tally in the Premier League as well as goals conceded.

Offering them new deals would mean that Klopp is not willing to spend in the transfer window and will be ready to work with what he has for next season.

According to me, Liverpool need to sign a few quality defenders to bolster their squad if they want to win more titles.
