The Deals That Could Have Made Manchester United Strong Title Contenders

Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese manager of Manchester United, Jose Mourinho is being tipped to make big money moves ahead of the deadline day and Sky sports commentator Martin Tyler is backing the former Los Blancos manager to stun his critics by landing a few unexpected names. It has not been a good pre-season tour for the Red Devils and constant rumbling from Mourinho in his post match interviews may force Ed Woodward to grant the Portuguese wishes in securing a couple of potential targets as the deadline day looms over.
Manchester United have already completed the signing of Brazil international Fred from Shaktar Donetsk for a fee of about €59m they beat rivals Manchester City for his signature. The Brazilian had earlier stated a desire to play under Man City boss Pep Gaurdiola but he won’t be able to do so now, since Man United were the only club willing to spend about €60m for the 25 year old.

The Red Devils have also bought in Portuguese full back Diogo Dalot from Liga Nos outfit FC Porto for a sum of €22m, the 22 year is capable to play on either side of the flank and can also be a handy right midfielder if needed. Man Utd also completed the signing of 35 year goalkeeper Lee Grant as a possible 3rd choice keeper.

Jose Mourinho is still looking for a defender to strengthen the back four, Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweirled are potential targets for the Red Devils, a few reports had claimed that they have come to personal agreements with both the defenders but are yet to agree a transfer fee. The Catalans may sell the Colombian international for about €40m as his price has certainly raised after a great World Cup campaign he has had and considering he was only bought by Barcelona this year in January.

Spurs are demanding almost £60m for their experienced center back and there isn’t much time left to re-negotiate and the London club may also now reject any advances made by Manchester United as they are yet to sign a player this summer and finding a replacement for the 29 year old may prove to be difficult but if the Red Devils give in to Spurs demand they would be obliged to accept it considering the Belgians age and £60m would be too hard to reject.

Speaking to Sky Sports news Martin Tyler said “I think he puts too much pressure on himself, They beat the Premier League champions last term and they came back from a two goal deficit, they did win trophies under Jose Mourinho, That’s the way he does it, the fans may not be so pleased with his way of management, I would never back against what Mourinho is going to do because I guess he knows what he is doing, it’s his path his destiny in the end.”

He further added “Even when he leaves and it now looks like he’s being eased out, but I’m not so sure now whether he is easing himself out, to be a top level manager, you have to be a little devious as well as being up front and motivational and all the other things, you plot a little bit and you are termed as a great plotter, he might have a few surprises”
Manchester United are all set to take on Leicester City in Premier League this Friday at the Old Trafford.
