The Failed Summer Signings That Could Have Made Manchester United An Unstoppable Force, Tottenham Relieved?

Jose Mourinho

Manchester United was second in the Premier League point table last season but the gap between the topper and them was a gigantic 19 point. The Red Devils started impressive last time though they failed to convert in the important matches. The defence went sloppy in many occasions and United failed to grab the opportunities to put them in the leading position.

The defence has been an issue for the Premier League sides for years and it was being rumoured that Jose Mourinho was interested to bring in the Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin to the Old Trafford. The Red Devils were so intent on signing the star defender Diego Godin on transfer deadline day that the management had reserved a time for a medical and also a private jet for the player. Manchester United were so much confident about his arrival in the deadline day though the Uruguayan centre-back rejected to come in England. Apart from Leicester City’s World Cup stunner Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur, United also targeted Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng to bring in summer, though neither came into the results.

After conceding seven goals in four games right at the beginning of the season, Mourinho was desperate to bring in some new faces in the centre defence. It is quite clear that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were nowhere near the mark and United need some iron legs in the deep. It is heard that Godin’s agent approached United earlier in the transfer window to propose a deal, though the defender himself was seeking a new bigger contract with the Atletis. Godin was a real bargain with a €20m release clause in his old deal. The new deal extends his staying time period at the Spanish capital by two years and supplies him a new £130,000-a-week contract.

As the deal broke in the final stage, United now have to continue with their available resources at least until the winter, when the transfer window will again go open. Mourinho and his co are now at tenth position in the league table with just 6 points in 4 matches. United will face Watford in the Gameweek 5, which will be an away match for them. Fans and media went vogue when the club faced two successive defeats in league matches against Brighton and Tottenham.

Brighton beat the most time league winner by a 3-2 margin. Even Paul Pogba’s late penalty kick fell short and Brighton grabbed the match with ease. It was a three-goal thriller against Tottenham but United failed to produce even one. Lucas Moura scored twice where Harry Kane opened the deadlock. United came back strong in the last match against Burnley where Lukaku scored twice. Though Marcus Rashford received the red card, it was all over a satisfying performance from the visitors. United need to be strong in the deep to do better in the upcoming schedule. The recent form is not satisfying for the Devils on the overall basis and they need to come back quickly if want to continue longer in Champions League. United are with Juventus and Valencia in the group where they must put on some real fight to survive and qualify for the next round.
