2. Phil Jones:
Jones started his United career with a phenomenal touch and his meteoric rise to being a United regular under the chaperonage of Ferguson was noteworthy indeed. After the departure of Ferguson, Jones continued to be an eminent moniker in the plans of David Moyes.
Jones honed himself into an impregnable force under Louis van Gaal and started partnering with Chris Smalling. A lackluster United which failed to score like they used to at one point in time, was entirely based on Jones, Smalling and De Gea.
However, with the arrival of the special one at United, call him Jose Mourinho, Jones got injured for a while. This injury was probably the beginning of the end for this towering monster in the heart of the United defence.
Jones started faltering and failed to make it to the starting eleven for quite a while. The second season of Mourinho saw intermittent bursts of brilliance which were rare, to be honest, and copious stints of failed performance from this English defender.
The current season has probably been worse for Jones. Forget defending, he is still to discern the fact that why was he placed in the line-up. He was solely responsible in case of Harry Kane’s opener against United in this season when he failed to stall him and came to a cropper in the process.
He got lucky in the first half after he shouldered Lucas Moura which was a give-able penalty, however, the stickler waived off the protests.
With a major surge to rope in Alderweireld or Maguire in the imminent window, Jones would definitely make the list of the exit if he fails to deliver soon enough.
