According to the latest report by news outlet ESPN, Chelsea superstar Marcos Alonso has signed a contract extension which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2023. The Spanish wingback penned a deal which would see him earn a massive hike in his wages as he committed to the deal on Tuesday.
Chelsea is currently sweating over the future of club talisman Eden Hazard as the Belgian winger has been flirting around with the La Liga giants Real Madrid of late. Hazard claimed that it would be a ‘dream come true’ to play with the European champions and it is also no secret that Real Madrid is keen admirers of the highly rated winger. In fact, Real Madrid had identified Hazard as the potential heir to Cristiano Ronaldo’s throne at the Santiago Bernabeu after the Portuguese starlet left the Spanish giants in the summer for Serie A champions Juventus. This has gotten the fans at Chelsea very anxious about the future of their star man who has already notched up eight goals this season. Chelsea will hope that Hazard does sign a new contract, which would make him the highest paid player at the club, instead of stalling it as his current one expires in the summer of 2020.
However, the Blues will be slightly relieved to know that one of their players in the form of Marcos Alonso has signed a contract extension with the club for another five years. The Spanish international was on duty with Spain earlier this month when he stated that he was in advanced talks with Chelsea over a possible new deal and finally that was confirmed when Alonso agreed to sign a new deal with the club yesterday. On the official club website, Alonso said, “I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world. It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”
When Alonso arrived at Chelsea back in the summer of 2016 from Fiorentina on a £24m deal, it didn’t seem like he would go on to achieve the success that he has over the recent past. But Alonso was a key member of the squad for former boss Antonio Conte as Chelsea won the Premier League title last term as Conte used the Spaniard as a wing back which proved to be very effective in attack as well as defense.
Even current Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has spoken very highly of Alonso when he revealed that the 27-year-old would be a major part of his plans in the future. Chelsea then made sure that it was a top priority to offer Alonso a new deal. Sarri praised Alonso by saying, “Alonso, at the moment; in this position at left-back is maybe the best in Europe. [His] physical qualities are at a top level, I think. He’s doing very well in the offensive phase. But I also think he can improve in the defensive phase. If he improves that, he could be the best left-back in the world.”
