Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is keen on signing Benfica star goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos in the upcoming winter transfer window in January. The German shot-stopper has been immense for Portuguese club SL Benfica and has attracted Klopp’s interest especially after the recent goalkeeping problem at Liverpool.
Liverpool was enjoying a perfect start to their current Premier League Campaign winning their first six games in the league and also the opening game in the Champions League against Paris Saint Germain. However, the loss of the last years Champions League final is still fresh in the memory of the Liverpool faithful when Loris Karius made two fatal blunders against Real Madrid to allow the La Liga giants to lift the European trophy for the 13th time in their rich club’s history. Karius received many hurtful fits of abuse by Liverpool fans all across the globe and Klopp decided to finally break the bank and sign a world class goalkeeper to ensure a better chance of winning silverware in the upcoming seasons.
Liverpool agreed on a deal with Serie A side Alisson Becker over a transfer which was the world record for the transfer for two weeks until Chelsea signed Kepa. Liverpool splashed €62m to secure the services of the Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson and he has been immense ever since helping Liverpool in their solid start to the season. And Liverpool did send Karius on loan to Besiktas which meant that Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet would be the second choice keeper for the Reds.
After a long time in his professional career, Mignolet was seen between the sticks for Liverpool in the League Cup clash against Chelsea at Anfield but Liverpool succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to the London side which immediately knocked them out of the competition. Both the goals that Chelsea scored were arguably savable and raised questions to whether Mignolet would even be a good enough back up to the number one Alisson. This performance by Mignolet proved that Liverpool still needs to find a suitable goalkeeper who can replace Alisson if he gets injured or needs rest time.
Jurgen Klopp broke the record for signing the most expensive central defender in the world after signing Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk for a monstrous fee of £75m from south coast club Southampton in January and strengthened his back line enormously but plenty of Liverpool supporters realize that they need a backup keeper as well in difficult situations.
Therefore Klopp has been eyeing Benfica star Odisseas Vlachodimos as his next possible target in January. The German keeper has heavily impressed in recent outings for the Portuguese club since transferring from Panathinaikos in May this summer. Beginning his career as a Stuttgart academy graduate, Vlachodimos came through the ranks at the Bundesliga club and moved to Greek giants Panathinaikos in 2016 where he developed further durintwo-yearo year spell. But the 24 year old then moved to Benfica with a steady growth and has started the season well with the Portuguese club which has also urged Klopp to move for Vlachodimos in January.
