Generally when a player wins a title, they are happy, overjoyed, over the moon and say things that go along with their best moods. However, when Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof was awarded the Swedish Best Player Of The Year award, his reaction to it was something totally different. Now, I do know that the Red Devils have seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo doing such stuff in the past, but the Swede’s recent statement confused everyone.
His recent statement after being awarded this title read as, “To The 12 Year Old Me. You Didn’t Dream Too Big.”
This could possibly be his way of saying that he is still not please by the way that he has been performing at Manchester United, since his move to Old Trafford back in 2017 and there is a lot of room for improvement still. On the other hand, it could also be him suggesting that he wishes to do more at the national level for his team and wants to win the World Cup in the tournaments to follow. A third possibility could be that he wants to be the best defender in the world of football, not just for Sweden and still has mountains to climb, which he never thought of back when he was a kid.
His national side has never won the FIFA World Cup and were once again eliminated in the quarter final stages of the tournament in Russia this year, when they lost 2-0 to Gareth Southgate’s England. This would have not made the player and his team-mates any happier and maybe this could be the reason why he wants to do more.
With that being said, there is a long-long way to go before they can actually challenge for the biggest title of them all. They looked really good in the tournament this year, though switched off at the business end of the tournament, which cost them their chance at making history.
Also, the team is still trying to fill the void left by the retirement of legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic (actually even United), who we all know is irreplaceable. It will surely take a lot of time to do that and whether it will actually happen or not, remains to be seen.
Further, the Red Devils are also struggling to win the Premier League title and will want to make an impact in the Champions League. Both titles will be on Jose Mourinho’s mind, as he wishes to win them soon and prove once again why he is the “Special One”.
They are keen to prove themselves and Lindelof might have a major part in them becoming champions of England and Europe once again. He is 24 at present and has a long way to go, with regards to his career as a player and can become a club legend with his performances in the seasons to come. The defence has been a big problem for the Portuguese manager and this has given the defensive superstar the opportunity to leave his mark in the top flight of English football.
