West London giants Chelsea could be forced into paying £50m for Bournemouth’s Calum Wilson, if the move for Gonzalo Higuain fails to materialize. The Argentine international who is on loan with AC Milan is currently signed with the champions of Italy, Juventus. Though he has been impressive in the past few campaigns and has been doing his part so far, the management at the Premier League giants are not convinced that an ageing star is the need of the day.
It was reported that his brother (who is his agent) was in London, looking to get a loan deal done with Maurizio Sarri’s side. The Italian was keen on adding the former Real Madrid and Napoli man to his current squad, as he looks to solve the problem up front.
Despite these claims, Sky in Italy had confirmed that Chelsea’s chief-executive Marina Granovskaia was still not convinced that the 31 year old striker is the solution to the Blues’ problems. She wants the club to look at alternatives and the 26 year old England international could be one of the options that she has on her mind.
Due to this, Sarri has kept Wilson as a backup, who has been superb this season and could be one of the findings of the current campaign, if he can keep up his good form. With that being said, the club could be considering signing him, if the deal with their primary target is dropped for any reason.
Higuain has been good overall in recent times, though he does have that tendency to be poor for a spell or two, which can hurt Chelsea’s chances. They are keen on winning titles and have finally decided that Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata are just not enough to pursue those ambitions.
Not just the strikers, due to the lack of form, players like Willian and Barkley have also gone dry and there is a serious need for change of personnel in the current transfer window. However, the club might first look at the loan deal for the Juve star and if that fails, only then will they target the Bournemouth attacker.
Sarri has worked previously with Higuain and it seems that he is trying to bring his kind of players at the Bridge, who will play his style of football. The current side has failed to really implement that kind of football and there are major issues which need to be sorted out.
In order to implement Sarri-ball style of play, the first area that needs to be targetted is the strike force and making stars like Hazard play a false-nine will not help the cause. Due to this, it is best to sign either one of the two and build the team around the attack, in the days to follow.
How successful this plan eventually is, remains to be seen. One thing is for certain that the fans will be happy to see either of the two stars at the club, with the likes of Morata surely gone for good now. Let’s hope for the best!!
