The Situation With Mesut Ozil
The German play-maker Mesut Ozil was absent from Arsenal’s 18 man squad in Saturday’s defeat to West Ham. The German attacker has been forced to miss the last games matches with a knee concern, but was due to return for the recent game at the London Stadium. Ozil trained all week with first team but he wasn’t allowed into 18 man squad. Emery was in defiant mood when asked why Ozil had not featured at all on Saturday, saying that he had decided what was best with respect to the tactics and the match.
The Gunners were stunned by Ex Arsenal star Samir Nasri whose surprise return to Premiere League under former boss Manuel Pellegrini worked surprisingly as he assisted Declan Rice to a winner. It is the first time that the north London outfit was beaten away from home by the Hammers since 2006. The decision to drop the World Cup winner did raise eyebrows, with it not being the first time Emery has decided that he is better off without the German in his match day squad.
After an impressive run of first quarter of the season, Emery suffered quite a few setbacks and a reverse saw the Gunners fail to close the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea. Manchester United face Tottenham on Sunday in Wembley and there is a high chance that they might cover up the 5th place with Ole and his United seek a 6th successive wins.
On asked about the German’s absence, the Spaniard replied, “We win with him, we lose with him. I think it is not one player we can not win or lose.”
The German has been struggling with his game time at Arsenal as Unai Emery has quite sidelined him. Ozil has out of action in recent weeks for a variety of reasons this season and Saturday saw Emery keep faith with the side that beat Fulham in their previous Premier League match.
Unai Emery on Mesut Özil’s omission further stated after the loss, “We decided that the players here were the best for this match. We have won with him, we have lost with him. No one player makes the difference between winning & losing the game”.
Recent Update-
A lot of pundits have had their say about the current situation between the two, with a mixed set of opinions. However, the fact of the matter is that the team that faced West Ham did lack the quality to go on and score and win against West Ham. The midfield was clearly the weak-link and there was no connectivity between the defence and the attack, which helped The Hammers regain the ball quite easily, when they had lost it.
Despite the player going through full-training, he was not picked, as he tweeted about it. Further, Ozil sent out yet another Tweet this time suggesting that he was fully fit ahead of the clash against the west Londoners and taking a possible dig at the boss. This could maybe force Emery to see that the player is ready to go or the Spaniard might just drop the player once again.
With that being said, if the team is now able to get the desired results without the former German international, the fans will stop complaining. However, if they fail to do so in the Chelsea game and Ozil is not played, things will go from bad to worse for the team and the fans. It will be interesting to see how the game against the Blues shapes up, with both teams looking to win and take back all three points.
