According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Manchester United are close to extending deals for Ashley Young and Ander Herrera soon enough. There are still some question marks over the possible futures of Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia, whose contracts expire in the summer, though England international Phil Jones signed a new long-term deal recently.
What a season of twists and turns Manchester United has had this season? The Red Devils seemed to be doomed and in dire straits when Jose Mourinho was in charge of the club. The Portuguese boss did not get his transfer targets in the summer and took out his vengeance on the football club instilled an incredibly defensive style of football that did not go down well with most of the United faithful. The English giants were struggling and not even the results were favoring Mourinho.
A 3-1 humiliation against fierce rivals Liverpool was the final nail in the coffin for Mourinho’s Manchester United career as a manager. The ‘Special One’ was then fired by the Manchester United board and the club then hired former Norwegian superstar Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the interim manager and caretaker to add stability to the club and he has done more than that in the short spell so far.
Manchester United’s season seemed doomed with nothing left to fight for but Solskjaer has turned things around incredibly at Old Trafford winning 10 out of 11 games in all competitions and the Red Devils now occupy the fourth spot in the League table, something that looked very unlikely under Mourinho.
There could be more positive news around the Red half of Manchester as English star Ashley Young and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera are close to signing contract extensions. Young has managed to adapt well to life under Solskjaer and a one year deal is set to be offered to the 33-year-old wing back, who has become a key figure for United over the recent weeks.
Even Ander Herrera’s impressive performances in a red jersey in midfield, alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, have shown the Manchester United faithful that he can fill the role of an anchor in midfield and also push the team forward. The 29-year-old Spaniard was on the exit door under Mourinho but after the departure of Marouane Fellaini to China, Herrera could be the versatile midfielder that United are keen to keep hold of.
However, according to the Sun, contract offers for another Spanish midfielder Juan Mata have not been talked about. Along with Mataand Antonio Valencia are nearing the end of their stay at Old Trafford in the summer. Valencia and Jones have been stalwarts at the back for United and but fans have shown their fury over the duo’s performances in the past. Although, all these players have shown improvement under the 45-year-old Solskjaer and the club may decide on separate deals for each player respectively. Only time will tell whether Mata, Jones or Valencia may be offered new deals to put pen to paper.
