Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has pointed out the five players that Manchester United should sign in the summer transfer window. The Englishman has highlighted the players he would like to see at Old Trafford giving Ed Woodward his work cut out for the upcoming summer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned the fortunes of Manchester United ever since taking charge of the club back in December. The Norwegian was brought in to stabilize the club until the end of the season after Jose Mourinho’s reign which disjointed the club and its philosophy. The smiles of the fans, however, are back on the faces at Old Trafford as the Red Devils completed an unbelievable comeback against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain earlier this week. Manchester United made it through to the Champions League quarter-finals even though it seemed highly unlikely as they overturned a 2-0 deficit at Old Trafford to win 3-1 at the Parc Des Princes.
Solskjaer has certainly put himself in line to take up the job at United on a permanent basis and if he does so, he needs re-enforcements in the summer. United always have to compete for the Premier League title because they are such a major club and usually a season without trophies is quite rare. Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville has outlined the five players that Solskjaer should sign in the summer if they want to compete for the top trophies next season. The 44-year-old ex-England international spoke to beIN Sport and stated that the club needs five players including two top quality centre-backs, one right back, one midfielder and one forward.
Neville said, “Manchester United need two centre-backs. I genuinely believe that. When you talk about United winning the Premier League title or trying to get to a Champions League final, you need top centre-backs. They need two new centre-backs and a right back. That is a minimum I think for the summer. They have looked at doing that in the past and they need to do it this year. The manager needs a new back four, there is no doubt. They need someone with authority. You watch Virgil van Dijk or Thiago Silva, they are world-class centre-backs and United need someone like that. I would say three defenders, one midfielder and one forward, because of the form of Alexis Sanchez. Unless he completely changes what he is doing in the next few months, United need another forward. I would say they need five additions to the squad. Then the squad would be in good shape and could challenge.”
Manchester United currently sit in fourth place on the English table and are in the hunt to finish in the top four this season and qualify for the Champions League. The red-half of Manchester faced another crunch test against North London side Arsenal this weekend, who are also in the race for a Champions League berth and were beaten.
Now, Solskjaer will hope to ignore this first defeat in the top flight of English football since taking over and will want to continue his team’s good form in the Premier League.
