According to the latest reports, Chelsea may still have the chance to sign Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi in the upcoming summer transfer window because of his behavior at the Serie A club. However, Chelsea can only make signings if their transfer ban is lifted, a ban which will reportedly see them unable to sign players for the next two transfer windows.
Ever since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea football club, the 60-year-old has done quite an impressive job by replacing his fellow Italian compatriot Antonio Conte last summer. The ex-Napoli master tactician instilled an effective and attractive brand of football into the club which received plenty of praise and plaudits from fans and pundits across the globe. Sarri also led Chelsea to the League Cup finals but unfortunately lost out to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the penalty shootout. The West London club is also in the quarterfinals of the Europa League and looks like serious contenders to go all the way and win the trophy. But one place where Chelsea are going to face an uphill battle is in the Premier League. The Blues currently sit in sixth place on the League table and have a tough few fixtures ahead of them to book a Champions League berth.
Mostly, it has been an upward trend for Chelsea this season but they are about to face a monumental task in the summer. Without qualification for Champions League football, it will be near impossible to keep hold of Belgian talisman Eden Hazard from the clutches of Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. Although Christian Pulisic’s arrival at Stamford Bridge will boost their forward line, Chelsea will not be able to recruit any other players for a whole year if the FA force a transfer band on the English club.
However, if Chelsea isn’t given a transfer ban, they can also have the boost of signing Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi in the summer. Gonzalo Higuain’s loan spell looks uncertain at the end of the season and Chelsea are struggling to find a goalscoring centre-forward. But if the London giants target Icardi, he could bang in the goals on a regular basis given his prolific record for Inter Milan. Icardi was stripped of his captain’s armband after rejecting a new deal at the San Siro. His current one expires in the summer of 2021 and the Argentine is looking to play his football elsewhere.
Recently, Inter manager Luciano Spalletti was fed up with the strikers’ antics and said, To have to negotiate with a player to get him to play and wear the Inter shirt is humiliating, for the fans and his team-mates. Do I have to email his lawyers before I can select him? Today, Mauro Icardi had to be left out because of the way he has behaved; it is only fair that the others play. It is a question of credibility”
Certainly, it seems that Icardi’s time at the San Siro will come to an end soon and if Chelsea has their transfer ban uplifted, the 28-year-old hitman could be at the top of their transfer list.
