The “Special One” Has His Say About Liverpool’s Clash Against His Former Club Chelsea

According to the latest reports, former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has stated that Liverpool’s encounter against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday is a must-win game for both English teams. The ‘Special One’ killed the hopes of Liverpool ending their drought for a League title back in 2014 when his Chelsea side came to Anfield and left with a 2-0 win after the infamous Steven Gerrard slip.

Liverpool are currently enjoying one of their best seasons in the Premier League ever since the club was formed back in 1892. The Merseyside club sit at the top of the table in England’s top flight and are two points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Although Manchester City still have a game in hand, Liverpool have done exceedingly well to remain in contention for the Premiership. Last season, Manchester City broke multiple records as they stormed their way to the Premier League title, amassing a staggering 100 points in the process. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side will ensure that this season’s title challenge goes down to the wire.

Liverpool will face a monumental task today when Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea come to visit Anfield. The Blues have been struggling off late and are desperate to strengthen their position on a Champions League berth given the competition around them. It promises to be a fascinating encounter with both sides eager to win the game but also cautious not to lose either. Liverpool must win in order to keep the pressure on Manchester City and Chelsea must win to keep their top four hopes alive.

Manchester United parted ways with Jose Mourinho back in December but the 56-year-old was in the Chelsea dugout five years ago when he ended Liverpool’s hopes of winning the title back in 2014. The ‘Special One’ has now opened up on what he thinks on Sunday’s much-anticipated game which will feature Liverpool and Chelsea.

While speaking to Russia Today, the Portuguese manager said, ‘Liverpool-Chelsea in the Premier League is a big one and for many reasons,  Liverpool, they have to win every match between now and the end of the season and wait for Man City to lose a couple of points. It is a must-win for Liverpool. At the same time, Chelsea need points to finish top four. ‘Manchester United is there, Spurs are there, Arsenal, despite their last defeat, is also there.”

Mourinho also took pride in admitting that he was the spoiler that crushed the dreams of Liverpool fans back in 2014 after Steven Gerrard’s slip cost them the game and eventually the Premier League as well.

The ex-Chelsea boss said that that past encounter could be on the minds of the Liverpool faithful which could cause their title hopes to crumble, “Chelsea needs points. It is a must-win for both. And to add something more to the game, the last time Liverpool were almost winning the title it was Chelsea who spoiled the celebration at Anfield. I am pretty sure people have that in mind. For me, that is the big game of the weekend.”
