Did This Injury Potentially Cost Manchester United A Place In The Top Four And Is It Time To Sell?

The Injury That Happened-

According to the reports back then, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was knocked out of action for a few weeks, as he had suffered a foot injury. The Belgian forward has gained some form before he got injured, prior to him missing out on a few crunch games for the Red Devils with their busy month’s schedule and eventually cost them a place in the top four.

Manchester United had done incredibly well over the past few months to get even somewhere near challenging for the top 4 spot. Initially, when the season began, the red half of Manchester was playing some dire football with no conviction. The ‘Special one’ was creating an extremely toxic atmosphere around Old Trafford with his negative tactics as the fans weren’t used to seeing such displays from their side. Without any results to show as well, the writing was on the wall for the Portuguese manager and after a 3-1 defeat against fierce rivals Liverpool, Manchester United decided to sack the 56-year-old Mourinho leaving the club languishing in sixth place and out of the League Cup as well.

However, United turned to a familiar face in the form of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stabilize the ship until the end of the season and the Norwegian has exceeded expectations since his appointment. Solskjaer had almost certainly got the job back then on a permanent basis, with United suffering a horrendous collapse in the final few weeks of the campaign under him.

The 46-year-old Norwegian took the English club into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after overcoming Paris Saint Germain in the Round of 16. United completed a dramatic turnaround at the Parc des Princes winning the game 3-1 after going down 2-0 at Old Trafford in the first leg. The players at United are now playing with a lot more freedom and as they are able to express themselves better and even play attacking football.

Despite being in excellent form since he took charge, United suffered a blip as they lost to Arsenal and lost ground on their fourth place, with things just falling apart. The Red Devils were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Wolverhampton Wanderers last week and they also have some injury woes to contend with.

Centre-forward Romelu Lukaku was the latest player at that point to suffer a foot injury and the 25-year-old would be out of action for about two or three weeks. An MRI scan at the Belgian camp concluded that his injury see him miss the games against Watford and Wolverhampton in the Premier League. Eventually, he did come back and by the time his form was long-gone.

Should He Be Sold?

Prior to the injury that he picked up, Lukaku was doing fine with regards to regaining his form and had putting in some good solid performances for his team. However, all that changed once he picked up a knock and was out of action. His overall form has not been that great and he has struggling to impress the fans and the United bosses.

With that being said, it might be high time to let him go and bring in a new striker, someone who can actually perform and live up to expectations. Who that player would be, remains to be seen.
