According to the latest reports, Arsenal boss Unai Emery has demanded that the north London club decide to sell star play-maker Mesut Ozil in the summer transfer window following his poor performance this season. The German midfielder is on the exit door at the Emirates Stadium as Emery has demanded the transfer board offload the player in his buy-out clause of £24m.
Ever since Unai Emery took charge of Arsenal football club back in the summer of 2018, there has been a sense of freshness in the air around the club. The Spaniard was the successor to the legendary Arsene Wenger who was at Arsenal for 22 long years. During the 69-year old’s reign, he guided Arsenal to seven FA Cup’s as well as three Premier League titles and got Arsenal back to competing. However, the Frenchman has been unable to take the club forward in his last few seasons and came under the criticism of the Gunners faithful as well due to his inability to adapt to the new generation and age of football. When Wenger departed, the void was filled by Emery who has had a mixed bag in his first season in England.
The 48-year-old implemented his philosophy into the club and most of his summer signings hit the ground running. He took Arsenal on a 22 game unbeaten streak across all competitions and had a top-four berth in his hands towards the end of the season. However, a stunning collapse in the final few hurdles meant that Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table. Emery also took Arsenal to the final of the Europa League and a win against local London rivals Chelsea would ensure that the north London outfit would play in the elite tournament for next season. Unfortunately, Arsenal suffered a hammering at the hands of Maurizio Sarri’s Blues in a 4-1 defeat in Baku and that meant that the Gunner will play in the Europa League itself next season.
One player who has come under heavy scrutiny over the course of the season is German star Mesut Ozil. 30-year-old has not been Emery’s most preferred option because of his work rate and the Spanish boss believes that Ozil does not offer too much of a defensive game. Ozil was not included in most of the games this season, which begged the question of whether he could be sold in the January transfer window itself following poor outings for Arsenal.

His £350,000 a week wage deal is also something that is keeping Arsenal on the brink of a transfer budget. Ozil is on contract with Arsenal until 2021 and even though his arrival at Arsenal back in January 2013 ended a trophy drought for the club, the £42m signing could be sold for a fee of just £24m this summer. Emery has reportedly demanded that Arsenal offload the 2014 World Cup winner to add some other reinforcements to the team. Italian clubs Inter Milan and Juventus are monitoring Ozil’s situation at the moment and are looking to lure him away from Arsenal.
