Match Report: Chelsea 2-0 Brighton; Was This A Convincing Win For The Blues

According to the new Chelsea manager, they needed the win, is exactly what the boss Frank Lampard said after his first home victory as a Premier League manager. The Blues deservedly won last night to make it nine wins out of nine league games against Brighton. Chelsea led at Stamford Bridge when Jorginho scored a penalty after Adam Webster fouled Mason Mount.

Albion, who have not won in the league since the opening day, struggled with unlucky after Dan Burn’s header hit the crossbar. The Brazilian winger Willian sealed the victory with a deflected strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s pass.

Chelsea now moves up to sixth in the Premier League while Brighton fall to 16th. As Chelsea manager said that they haven’t had a 90-minute game where they have controlled it enough before this match. And he added that the only disappointment was that they weren’t able to score more goals. The game was important for Chelsea. They got a clean sheet as well.

The Blues came with a youthful team following a transfer ban. Chelsea dropped points regularly and that win was much needed. There had been 25 goals in their opening six league games, however, they had not won at home in three top-flight matches.

This makes Lampard the worst record of any Blues manager this millennium after nine games in all competitions, with no clean sheets at all.

During the first half, it looked like a frustrated side with none of their 17 shots going in. The newcomer Mason Mount went closest when his free-kick from the left-wing evaded everyone and hit the post. Pedro and Tammy Abraham managed five shots each. They both had three of them on target without but couldn’t find the net.

However, the Blues kept going and got their reward when Webster fouled Mount. Jorginho took the opportunity unlike Barkley in the Champions League and scored his second goal of the season from the spot.

Chelsea dominated for the entire game and Willian blasted home his first Premier League goal since January, however with the help of a deflection.

Chelsea are more like a youth squad this time. The English youngsters like Tammy Abraham, who is also the second top scorer with seven goals, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have scored 11 of Chelsea’s 14 Premier League goals together, and that shows this team’s youth strength.

Hudson-Odoi came on for his first Premier League game of the season after recovering from the Achilles injury. He looked solid and was one of the better performers on the night, which would be a positive sign for the fans.

Brighton briefly threatened an equaliser when Steven Alzate saw a shot deflected wide before Dan Burn headed the resulting corner into the ground and up off the crossbar. It was a gross routine victory for Chelsea. Brighton’s lack of menace summed up to the good luck to the host side. Dale Stephens’ lazy effort rolled apologetically into the hands of manger keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and the points as well near the final whistle.
