What Frank Lampard Did Wrong? Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side was barely victorious over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with the Blues’ only goal of the game coming from a strike by Marcos Alonso. The goal was the only one of the match and proved to be the winner, with the west London outfit rather poor in front of the goal. Due to this, it was a hard-fought contest and a goal-keeping error helped the home side, secure all three points from this tie.
If not for that error from Dubravka, the goal could have ended in a goalless tie. The Londoners were lucky on the night, as they secured all three points from the fixture.
It was quite evident that Chelsea was the team in form, going into the match. However, the performance on the night was not up to the mark. Not everything was the problem of the players, as some of Lampard’s decisions were not up to the mark as well. The former England international will want to rectify those if he wants to get the right results in the future.
Here are three huge errors that Lampard made and could have cost Chelsea some crucial points on the night-
Starting with Ross Barkley not a great idea by Lampard
In form at the international level or not, Lampard should stop relying on Barkley. The midfielder may be talented but is not good enough to start for Chelsea. He is been quite poor since the new manager took over and does not fit into his style of play. Due to this, it is not wise to waste time on him, when Lampard has a lot of young talents that he can utilize instead.
Even a player like Willian looks to be reviving his career under the new boss. For some reason, Barkley has only gone from bad to worse. This can hurt the Londoners in the long run, if they are not careful now.
Tammy Abraham looked tired, should have gone off
Any fan, whether a Chelsea one or a neutral, realized that Tammy Abraham was really tired and needed to come off. However, Lampard was just pushing him to finish the match. This wasn’t the best of plans, as it didn’t pay off. With the west London outfit playing in mid-week in the Champions League, the Chelsea star might be facing fatigue issues.
He surely needs rest, but the manager does not rely on Michy Batshuayi or Olivier Giroud, which is the problem. With that being said, Lampard’s compatriot needs a break and hopefully, he is used more wisely, in the days to come.
Christian Pulisic needs to start games for Lampard
The USA international was once again on the bench and came on in the second half. The fans were eager to see more of the player, the club brought in to replace Eden Hazard. With that being said, they will be hoping that Pulisic gets more game-time in mid-week in the Champions League.
He has been a top performer in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund. If given the right opportunities, he can be a huge asset for the Londoners in the long run.
