FC Barcelona wants to renew the contract of their star goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. They have made it their priority. Barca has been trying to negotiate with Ter Stegen for months but still has not reached any concrete results. Ter Stegen however, has rejected multiple proposals from the Catalan outfit. Hence, Barcelona has thought it better to negotiate with him after the coronavirus pandemic. They have already informed the German about it. Barca is taking a huge risk in this regard as many top clubs have already shown their interest in Ter Stegen.
FC Barcelona has a good relationship with Marc Andre Ter Stegen and his agents. According to SPORT, both parties can not reach a common understanding still, but they do want to reach a positive agreement. Stegen’s agent Gerd vom Bruch clearly understands the club’s stance regarding the agreement. He is clear about the reason why Barcelona wants to keep the contract talks on the stall for now. The Catalan club wants to assess its situation post coronavirus pandemic.
Ter Stegen’s contract negotiation with Barcelona stalled?
Barcelona has also kept their contract talks with Arthur Melo and Nelson Semedo on hold. Ter Stegen is keen on extending his contract in FC Barcelona. The German loves the club and the city and is very happy with his family in Barcelona. However, he also realises that the situation may not be the same post the coronavirus crisis. So, he wants the club to value him.
Ter Stegen does not earn anything close to what his teammates earn. Some of them have even renewed recently. Some players in the team earn much more than him, even sitting on the bench for most of the season. Stegen is the most important player in the team after Lionel Messi, judging on the current role and the form. So, Barcelona knows his demands are justified. They can’t reach to any terms just because they don’t have the finance currently to pull this off.
Some club sources deny the reports that Ter Stegen is listening to offers from any other club. They stress that Stegen’s prioritises to increase his contract tenure in Barcelona. However, other European clubs do have an eye for him. The German’s contract expires in 2022. So, if Barcelona does not extend his contract this summer, then they have to sell him next year before he leaves for free in 2022.
Barcelona Or A Top European Rival?
Juventus, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Chelsea are some of the clubs who are keeping an eye on the German’s situation in Barcelona. Manchester City even tried to sign him in 2016. Barcelona did not give the nod and hence they signed Ederson. The halt in this contract negotiation will only add fuel to the rumours.
Despite that, the top goalie has a lot of options. Quite a few European clubs are keen on pushing for a deal for his services. It will be interesting to see which English club signs him if they offer the right price. Otherwise, he could move to Italy or his native country, Germany.
