Chelsea Transfer Update- The 27-year-old FC Porto full-back, Alex Telles is a transfer target for the Blues. Frank Lampard had issues with left-backs this season. Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri have been inconsistent throughout the season. Lampard could not trust his left-backs in the squad at times. He had to play captain Cesar Azpilicueta out of position in many games this season.
Telles has told the Portuguese club he is not going to sign a new contract at Porto. His current deal is running out in the next summer. Porto would want to cash in on their star and Chelsea can get their man for around £30m this season.
Former Blue Scott Sinclair suggests that it will be a risk to sign a player that is not proven at the highest level of the game. He has rather suggested that the club should look for someone who is a proven-star. That would be a much more sensible signing.
“Alex Telles is a good player, I like what I have seen of him but whether he has the ability to adapt to the Premier League is a different question. There is no other league like the Premier League, purely due to the competition in every game, week in, week out – there are no easy games. That is why I would prefer to see Chelsea sign proven players that have played in the Premier League before.”
Emerson is a player who was terrific before joining Chelsea but took a bit longer to adapt to the pace of English football. In the latter half of the last season, he was a regular for the blues under the previous manager Maurizio Sarri but after his departure, things changed. A serial number of inconsistent performances did not allow him to be a regular choice at Stamford Bridge and that shows how different is the Premier League from the others.
Chelsea was also linked with a Premier League-proven left-back i.e. Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell. The Foxes are demanding £80m for their player. That has raised doubts over the transfer speculation. Brendon Rodgers’s side had a terrific season, as the Foxes are sitting above Chelsea in the League table. However, in the last few months, Chilwell’s form has not been great. This can surely affect his market price.
“There have been rumours about Chelsea signing Ben Chilwell – if you had asked me six months ago, I would have said that he was the ideal left-back for Chelsea but his form has dipped towards to the back end of the season, which has made me question him.” – Sinclair added.
“You have to remember, it is a massive difference being a player at Leicester City and Chelsea. At Chelsea, you have the expectation of winning games every week, winning titles and European Cup Competitions.”
On the other hand, Tellas has a much impressive record for Porto. 21 goals and 52 assists in 183 appearances show the ability of a top player. The defender, who is turning 28 this year can be a handy addition to Chelsea’s left-flank. The west Londoners have been vulnerable on that side in recent times.
