Opinion: How Chelsea FC Can Line Up With Timo Werner Next Season?

Timo Werner

Chelsea has finally made another top-class signing ahead of the next season (or so it is being said). The player is said to be Liverpool target, Timo Werner. The RB Leipzig striker is expected to sign for the Blues next week in a deal worth £53m. The 24-year-old German International will be the second signing under Frank Lampard. In February Chelsea completed the signing of Hakim Ziyech for £38m. The AFC Ajax playmaker will join the squad in July.

Chelsea is currently occupying the fourth position in the Premier League table. They will be back in action from 17th June as the Premier League set to resume again. The Blues are on track to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The remaining fixtures will be played behind closed doors and few of the home games will be shifted to neutral venues to avoid social gathering. Due to the transfer ban, the Blues were unable to sign any player this season. After the departure of Eden Hazard, it was always going to be tough for them to play on the same level. Many of the Chelsea academy graduates got their chance to prove themselves in the first team.

After the expected departure of star players like Willian and Pedro, the fans will be excited to see these new additions in the Chelsea attack next season. Let us discuss how Chelsea can line up with Werner upfront.

Here are some of the possibilities below of how Timo Werner can play-

Number 9

Chelsea has struggled to score goals this season. First-choice striker Tammy Abraham has struggled with injuries and inconsistency. Lack of experience has been also an issue that Timo Werner can fill up. Tammy Abraham has scored 15 goals across all competitions this season. Werner is a proven goal scorer in the Bundesliga. He has already scored over 30 goals this season. He can easily take Tammy spot in the first XI.

On the Wings –

One of the best qualities of Timo Werner is his versatility. RB Leipzig’s coach Julian Nagelsmann has often used him on the wide of the attack. Most recently Werner spent most of his time on the wide left and right in the Champions League round of 16 ties against Tottenham. With Willian and Pedro’s exit almost confirmed, Werner can be a good option on the Chelsea wings.

Timo Werner as a False 9

Since Didier Drogba left, Chelsea has struggled to find a top-class forward like him. Even after having Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi in the squad, many Chelsea managers have opted to play the starting XI without a main centre-forward. Pedro, Hazard, and most recently Christian Pulisic has been used as a false 9 when strikers were miss firing. Timo Werner can be used in that role if needed.

Number 10 –

At the moment Chelsea does not have a quality number 10 in their squad. Sometimes, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, and Willian have been used there but still, a frontline attacker is being missing. With Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud up front, Lampard can use Werner as a number 10.
