Euro 2020: Team Of The Tournament; Here’s The Players That Made It

The Euro 2020 tournament ended with a win for the Italians. Roberto Mancini’s side won the title, after a hard-fought last few games. There were some standout players from the tournament. Keeping that in mind, the official team of the tournament was revealed.

Below is the list of stars that made it to this Euro 2020 team-

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Donnarumma

The Italian showed the world how capable he was in this tournament. He is 22 with 33 caps to his name already. He helped Azzurri to their second title with two penalty saves in the shoot-out triumph over England in the finals.

The wall of Italy did not concede a single goal in the group stages. Donnarumma was a mainstay between the posts for his country. He also made a crucial penalty save in the semi-finals versus Spain. His performances throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament award as well.

Defenders:

1) Kyle Walker

The English right-back was phenomenal for his nation throughout the tournament, keeping three clean sheets in just 4 games. Walker was involved in both ends of the pitch, making runs into the opponent’s box when needed. He was a constant starter in Southgate’s XI even though they had many options in the right-back position.

2) Leonardo Bonucci

Bonucci finished the Euro 2020 without getting dribbled past even once, just one stat showing how good he was this tournament. Even though he had an up and down season with Juventus in 2020, Leonardo came back stronger with Italy. He was one of the reasons for Italy’s good defensive performance throughout the tournament.

3) Harry Maguire

A wall throughout the tournament for his nation, Harry Maguire proved many wrongs as he helped England reach the finals of the Euro 2020. Even though he missed a couple of games in the group stages, Maguire was up and running when he was fit and got his chance. Solid at the back and even more dangerous in the air, Harry Maguire was a complete package for his country.

4) Leonardo Spinazzola

The Italian left-back was arguably their best player in the tournament after Donnarumma. Three clean-sheets in the group stages and an assist versus Austria, Spinazzola was on top of his game. That was until he suffered a horrendous injury versus Belgium, which ruled him out of the tournament.

Midfielders:

1) Jorginho

After having a very successful club season, winning the UCL with Chelsea, Jorginho had his eyes set on the Euros. The defensive midfielder was absolutely world-class this season, one of the best midfielders if not the best this tournament. Winning both UCL and the Euros, Jorginho could be the underdog for the Ballon d’Or.

2) Pedri

The 18-year-old was the busiest player on the pitch for Spain, as he did not miss a single regular time minute of Spain’s campaign. Capping a breakthrough season at Camp Nou by becoming one of Enrique’s most trusted players and surprising the footballing world with his grace under pressure. Pedri was also named the young player of the tournament.

3) Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Throughout Denmark’s magical run, Hojbjerg’s intensity, the determination was key to their success. He played every single minute and covered over 65km on the pitch, assisting thrice- a return only bettered by Switzerland’s Steven Zuber. Like Denmark, Hojbjerg is the underdog on this list.

Forwards:

1) Federico Chiesa

With a totally dominant group stage, Chiesa may have been unnoticed in the Azzurri side but as games got tighter and deeper into the tournament, the 23-year-old stepped up. He scored the winner vs Austria, scored against Spain as well. Chiesa is an absolute workhorse, proving time and time again with his nation and the club, his blistering pace and neat feet make defenders go crazy.

UEFA unveil the Euro squad with Romelu Lukaku in attack

2) Romelu Lukaku

The Inter striker scored four goals for his country, and his contributions were acknowledged by UEFA even though Belgium were knocked out in the quarter-finals. Belgium’s all-time top scorer already was in top-notch form in this tournament after coming off a brilliant season at club level.

3) Raheem Sterling

If England reached the final, it was because of their winger, Raheem Sterling. Proving the doubters wrong, Sterling scored 100% of England’s group stage goals, 3 goals and 2 assists in the tournament. Completed the most dribbles by any player, drowning in diver shouts left and right, but it was Raheem who dragged his nation to the finals.
