Latest Chelsea News: Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli has been allowed to join Chelsea
Latest Chelsea News: Several reports, including one from Area Napoli (via Football.london), claim that Chelsea has been approached with an offer to purchase Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli during the forthcoming summer transfer window.
In Italy, the 30-year-old is considered one of the top defenders in the country. He has played an important role in the Gli Azzurri’s defensive success for the better part of a decade. He is now 30 years old and is towards the conclusion of his playing career. But he still has a good few years left in him to compete at the highest level.
If anything, Thiago Silva has shown that age is only a number as long as one adapts to the game and plays to one’s individual abilities. It remains to be seen whether or not Koulibaly will choose to go that route in his career.
Injuries plagued him throughout the season. Koulibaly endured a disappointing 2020/21 campaign. He has now returned in force, assisting Napoli in their quest to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2022/23. There is still a lot of football left in him. So, a manager with the ability of Thomas Tuchel will be able to extract every last drop of performance from him.
Koulibaly on his way to Chelsea?
The specifics of the proposition made to Chelsea are still a mystery at this point. However, it would come as a surprise if Napoli allows their great defender to leave the club for a bargain price. In addition, given Chelsea’s present predicament, any agreement will have to be put on hold.
Chelsea is about to embark on a key summer in which they may be forced to overhaul their defensive line. Antonio Rudiger is reportedly on his way to Real Madrid. Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are also said to be on their way. This will leave the team with a dearth of experienced defenders, particularly in the center of the defense.
Chelsea has a monster of a defender in Koulibaly. They need to bring in both quality and numbers to be successful in the Premier League. The Senegalese international is a force to be reckoned with when he is on the form. He might very well prove to be the pivot around which the Blues can reconstruct their defensive line in the next season. It remains to be seen whether or not this will take place.
Will the move go through?
Attempts to recruit Koulibaly will only provide a short-term solution to Chelsea’s concerns at the very most. This club would be better served by seeking younger replacements who can continue to serve the club in the future. It remains to be seen if Chelsea will have the luxury of doing so throughout the summer.
Trevoh Chalobah is a member of Chelsea’s team. He performs well anytime he is called upon. However, if any of Chelsea’s most steadfast members depart soon, he will be unable to fulfill the role of anchoring Chelsea’s defense on his own.
Jorginho came from the same club when Maurizio Sarri brought him to Stamford Bridge, as well as Tiemoue Bakayako and Nathaniel Chalobah. This demonstrates that the two clubs have maintained a channel of contact in recent years when it comes to transfer deals between them.
