Arsenal Newsnow: Chris Sutton said after Tuesday’s 0-0 home draw with Newcastle United that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta “lost all control” on the sidelines. He has also labelled the Spaniard a ‘clown’.
Arteta’s team played the Toon to a scoreless draw in the Premier League match at Emirates Stadium. It was the first time the Gunners have gone without scoring in a Premier League game this year. The Magpies are only the third side this season to prevent them from winning. [ Arsenal Newsnow ]
When Madley and Attwell disallowed a second penalty in stoppage time, Arsenal felt more offended. The ball obviously impacted Jacob Murphy’s right elbow with his arm out of his body. But the authorities judged he was too near as Granit Xhaka crossed to award a spot-kick.
With their constant dilatory play, Newcastle had further irritated Arsenal. When the ball went out of play, the Magpies tried to shave as much time as possible off the clock. Madley seldom pushed the Toon players to get back into the game quickly. [ Arsenal Newsnow ]

Chris Sutton was not impressed with ARTETA’s touchline antics against Newcastle
After each of referee Madley’s calls that Arsenal manager Arteta thought went against his team at home versus Newcastle, he became agitated and yelled at fourth official Stuart Attwell. He was a vivacious figure on the sidelines, often venturing beyond his technical expertise.
To Sutton, Arteta crossed a boundary when he lost his temper. Even if he believes that Madley was incorrect to not impose a penalty for Burn yanking Gabriel’s shirt. But the Celtic icon agreed with the official’s verdict for Murphy’s handball. [ Arsenal Newsnow ]
“There is a fine line between being passionate and a clown and Mikel Arteta was the latter on Tuesday,” he told the Daily Mail.
“It can be entertaining but it can be embarrassing, too. Should Arsenal have been awarded a penalty for Dan Burn’s pull on Gabriel? Absolutely. Should they have had one for Jacob Murphy’s handball? Absolutely not. Yet Arteta lost all control in stoppage time. I can understand getting caught up in the heat of the moment. It happens, you’re angry [so] you vent. But Arteta was at it all game, protesting against every decision,” he added.
It will be important to see whether Arsenal manages to win the English Premier League title this season. If not, then this match will surely be a deciding factor.
