Football Insider reports that James Milner has turned down a move to Leeds United in favour of playing for Brighton & Hove Albion. The 37-year-old midfielder will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the current campaign. Meanwhile, it has been reported that Brighton and Milner have already agreed on a transfer for the summer.
The ex-England international played his way up at Leeds United. For a number of years, he played on their top squad. He played in 53 games for them and scored six goals. Milner has already hinted at his willingness to join the Whites.
Milner said: “You never know in football what’s around the corner. I’m biased, but I think the Premier League will be a better place with Leeds in it.”
However, it seems that he has turned down the offer to return to his old team. And if the rumours are true, the club knows full well that they couldn’t afford to sign the 37-year-old. Leeds is in a relegation battle right now. It’s possible they won’t even be in the English Premier League next season.
What’s the matter?
Meanwhile, since it became evident that he would be leaving the Merseyside club, Brighton has been keeping tabs on Milner. The experienced midfielder’s time at Liverpool has proven invaluable. He has played in more than 325 games with the Reds and has helped them score 72 times.
The 37-year-old player’s contract with the club he joined in the summer of 2015 is up for renewal this summer. So he is expected to leave at that time. Also, Brighton has a better chance of signing him than any of the other teams.
Since taking over at Brighton, Roberto De Zerbi has been fantastic. And he wants to improve his team for the next season. De Zerbi would love to have Milner join his team because of his wealth of expertise.
The 37-year-old Liverpool midfielder has plenty of life left in the tank. Given his flexibility, he might be a terrific asset for the seagulls. The fact that Milner can play in a variety of positions is a huge asset for the Italian manager.

Liverpool beat Brentford 1-0 on Saturday, keeping their Champions League ambitions alive thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 30th goal of the season. The early goal, assisted by Virgil van Dijk’s head down, tied the Egyptian with Steven Gerrard for fifth place on the Reds’ all-time scoring list and brought Jurgen Klopp’s team within a point of fourth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League.
This was by no means a classic Liverpool performance. But they did hold tight in the second half against a succession of set pieces from a strong and determined Brentford team.
