Arsenal News: After the Gunners’ 3-1 Premier League victory against Chelsea on Tuesday (May 2), club icon Ian Wright lauded skipper Martin Odegaard as the squad’s finest performer this season.
In doing so, Mikel Arteta’s squad ended a winless skid of four games. Odegaard scored twice in the 31st minute. Gabriel Jesus added another by the 34th, giving the home team a comfortable 3-0 lead. In the 65th minute, Chelsea’s Noni Madueke scored a consolation goal.
Wright, who won five titles with Arsenal, including the Premier League in 1997–98, was effusive in his appreciation of Odegaard after the victory. He expressed astonishment that Real Madrid had released him.

Ian Wright lauded skipper Martin Odegaard as the squad’s finest performer for Arsenal this season
He told Premier League Productions (via HITC): “I couldn’t believe we got him on loan from Real Madrid in the first place and then when he came back. His pedigree, what he is capable of, and his ability. The fact that he is captain now – leading by example and chipping in with that many goals. He has been unbelievable.”
The former attacker continued: “I think he has been our player of the season, if I am totally honest. William Saliba was on that track. But he has been injured. Odegaard’s consistency for Arsenal this season has been absolutely tremendous for us.”
The Norwegian playmaker transferred to Arsenal in the 2021 January transfer window, originally on loan from Real Madrid. The 24-year-old was permanently signed by the north London club that summer for £34 million.

Odegaard, who was elected captain at the beginning of this season, has been a strong leader for his squad. He has appeared in 41 games in all competitions this year, with 14 goals and eight assists.
After Arsenal’s 3-1 victory against Chelsea, left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, formerly of Manchester City, was effusive in his admiration of Martin Odegaard. Odegaard scored first with a spectacular strike in the 18th minute. The playmaker scored off the underside of the bar after Granit Xhaka’s pass found him on the outside of the area.
After 13 minutes, the duo struck again, this time hurting Chelsea with a goal when Xhaka sent a low cross into the box that Odegaard expertly finished.
