Luciano Rodriguez is no longer a target for Chelsea. City Football Group has emerged victorious in the competition to recruit the 20-year-old prodigy. As Graeme Bailey of HITC revealed, Chelsea’s attempts to sign the Liverpool FC Montevideo player have failed. Rodriguez will, instead, pay €12 million to join Girona, a team that is part of the City Football Group.
One of the brightest emerging talents in South America has quickly become Luciano Rodriguez. Originating from Montevideo, he started his career with CA Bella Vista and CA Progreso before joining Liverpool FC Montevideo in January of 2023. He has improved greatly since moving and is now a prominent player for his old team.
Chelsea Set To Lose Race For The 20-year-old Prodigy
Rodriguez’s seven goals in 19 games played in all competitions this season have drawn interest from a number of elite European teams. Not insignificantly, his exploits have drawn attention from big teams as Manchester City, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. Still, the City Football Group is the one that finally got his signature.
Rodriguez was of interest to Chelsea since they needed offensive reinforcements in the next summer transfer window. For their purposes, the young Uruguayan seemed to be ideal. Sadly for the Blues, their most recent effort to access the talent pool in South America has not been successful. With a bold action, City Football Group has won the contract, forcing Chelsea to seek for other offensive possibilities.
Rodriguez will cost Liverpool FC Montevideo €12 million. The 20-year-old will join Girona, another team in the vast network of clubs owned by the City Football Group, on a five-year deal. The deal emphasises the City Football Group’s approach of developing young players at all of its associated teams. Girona prevailed because of their better competitive position, although Rodriguez was also under consideration by Palermo, another City Football Group team.
Rodriguez will have important experience playing at the top level of European football next season when Girona plays in the UEFA Champions League. His growth and assimilation into European football could depend on this exposure. The way the young South American talent adjusts to life in Catalonia and plays on one of the largest club football platforms will be watched by everybody.
All things considered, Chelsea’s transfer intentions have suffered a major blow with their inability to acquire Luciano Rodriguez. The 20-year-old wonderkid’s successful purchase by Girona by the City Football Group highlights the strategic benefits of a multi-club network as well as the intense rivalry for young talent. Fans and experts will be keeping a close eye on Rodriguez as he starts this new chapter in his career.

Liverpool is seeking over £20 million this summer for 22-year-old Sepp van den Berg. According to The Athletic, the Dutch defender could not be at Liverpool FC once the next transfer market closes. Signing him would be interesting to Southampton and Brentford.
Ever since joining Liverpool’s first squad in July 2019, Sepp van den Berg has found it difficult to hold onto a regular place. He joined Liverpool when he was seventeen years old and has spent the bulk of his career on loan. He has had three loan stints in the last five years, the most recent one with FSV Mainz 05, where he scored three goals and played around 3,000 minutes in 36 games.
As the summer transfer window draws near, van den Berg’s future at Liverpool is still unknown. Since Liverpool is looking for a new center-back and has shown interest in Antonio Silva, van den Berg is unlikely to start. Interest in van den Berg is not, however, in short supply. The teenage defender is seen as having promise by Southampton and Brentford.
