Both Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in 19-year-old Serie A centre-back Dean Huijsen, a bright young prospect. Huijsen, who was reared in Spain but born in Amsterdam, developed his talents in the Juventus junior ranks. He hasn’t yet been able to hold down a regular place in Juventus’ first squad despite his promise.
Huijsen is a loan player with AS Roma this season. He has played in 14 games throughout his tenure, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist. Not surprisingly, his performances have drawn attention, and he will return to Juventus this summer—though he may not remain there for very long. He is much wanted to join the Premier League by Newcastle United and Liverpool.
It seems logical why Liverpool is interested in Huijsen. Joel Matip is scheduled to become a free agent on July 1, so they must fortify their defence. Huijsen is the ideal young, gifted centre-back the club is seeking for. He appeals to the Reds because of his capacity to play under duress and support both defense and offense.
Newcastle United has to strengthen their defensive line as well. Their team has voids due to long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. One suggested remedy has been Huijsen. Huijsen’s history shows he may be the guy the Magpies need to come in and produce consistently.

Huijsen will not be simple to sign, however. Juventus is not keen to part with their youthful prowess. They will only take into consideration an offer that is “monstrous” and difficult to turn down. To have any hope of obtaining his services, Liverpool and Newcastle will thus both have to make substantial offers.
Huijsen himself has to make a choice. He has said he wants to join Juventus’ first squad, and moving elsewhere may put that dream off. Should he remain, he will fight for a place in the Allianz Stadium team. But a transfer to the Premier League presents a new type of chance and challenge, maybe accelerating his growth in one of the most cutthroat leagues in the world.
Next weeks will be very important. Newcastle and Liverpool need to determine how much they are prepared to spend on this developing potential. Any bids Juventus receives will be assessed against Huijsen’s possible future contributions to their own team. Huijsen will also have to decide whether to start a fresh adventure in England or battle for his position in Italy.
