Arsenal failed to sign THIS World Class winger in the summer

Arsenal was reportedly in the mix to sign Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman during the last transfer window. The north Londoners have been on a mission to bolster their squad with top talent, and Coman, one of the most decorated players in world football, seemed like a perfect fit. With league titles in Germany, France, and Italy under his belt, his experience and success at the highest level made him an attractive target.

Bayern Munich had made the Frenchman available for transfer as they reshaped their squad. The arrival of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace meant Coman is not a crucial part of Bayern’s plans. Despite being a key player for them in the past, the German club decided it was time to move on, opening the door for potential suitors.

Arsenal was keen to add Coman to their impressive lineup of attackers. Even with a forward line that boasts some of Europe’s finest talent, Mikel Arteta’s side believed that Coman could bring something extra to their squad. His speed, dribbling ability, and knack for scoring in big games would have made him a valuable addition.

However, Arsenal wasn’t alone in their pursuit. According to reports, three other clubs were also showing interest in securing Coman’s signature. The competition for the Frenchman’s services was fierce, but none of the interested parties, including Arsenal, could agree on terms with Bayern. The negotiations didn’t materialize into a transfer, leaving Coman to remain in Germany for the time being.

In the end, Arsenal shifted their focus and brought in Raheem Sterling from Chelsea instead. While Sterling is undoubtedly a top player with Premier League experience, the move left some fans wondering what could have been if the Gunners had secured Coman.

From a strategic perspective, Arsenal’s interest in Coman made sense. Adding a player of his caliber would have strengthened their squad and added depth in key areas. The competition for places in Arteta’s team would have intensified, which could have pushed the current attackers to raise their game even further.

Opinion:

However, one could argue that Arsenal’s inability to close the deal reflects a challenge they continue to face in the transfer market. While the club has shown ambition in recent windows, competing with Europe’s elite clubs for top talent remains a tough task. The Sterling signing may have been a solid alternative, but missing out on Coman could be seen as a missed opportunity.

In hindsight, it’s worth considering if Arsenal needed another winger, given their existing options. With players like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard already in the squad, adding another wide player might have created more headaches for Arteta in terms of squad rotation. Coman’s addition could have been a luxury rather than a necessity.

Ultimately, the Gunners will move forward with their current squad, but the thought of what Coman could have brought to the Emirates will linger. Whether Arsenal’s decision to pivot to Sterling instead of pushing harder for Coman proves successful remains to be seen, but the club’s ambition to keep improving is clear.
