Charles Watts comments on Kingsley Coman to Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal faced another season of disappointment, falling short of the Premier League title to Manchester City. Despite having a strong squad, Arteta couldn’t overcome Pep Guardiola’s side. To close the gap, he looked to strengthen his team, with the focus on adding more firepower. Kingsley Coman, a French winger from Bayern Munich, was one of the players linked to a potential move to the north Londoners.

During the summer transfer window, Arteta was on the hunt for a winger to boost his attacking options and increase competition within the squad. Arsenal needed someone who could add depth and quality to the flanks. Before landing Raheem Sterling on a loan deal from Chelsea, the Gunners were connected to various names, and one of those was Coman. However, Charles Watts, speaking on Caught Offside, expressed doubt about the validity of those rumors.

Charles Watts comments on Kingsley Coman to Arsenal

Coman’s career trajectory is impressive. He started his professional journey at PSG, where he gained recognition in their first team. In 2014, he made a move to Juventus and won the Serie A title with the Italian giants. Afterward, he joined Bayern Munich on a two-year loan, which eventually turned into a permanent transfer in 2017. Since then, Coman has been a regular presence in Bayern’s attack, contributing to their success with his pace and skill on the left wing.

However, recent seasons haven’t been as favorable for the 28-year-old. He has seen his role reduced at Bayern, no longer being a guaranteed starter as he once was. With the arrival of new talents and tactical changes, Coman has found himself slipping down the pecking order. As a result, the French international reportedly explored options for a move away from the German club during the summer transfer window.

The rumors linking Coman to Arsenal surfaced late in the transfer window, fueling speculation about a possible move. The Gunners, desperate for a winger, seemed to have turned their attention to the Frenchman after failing to secure a deal for Nico Williams, their primary target. Yet, according to Charles Watts, these rumors might not hold water. He suggested that Coman’s representatives were actively seeking a transfer, which led to his name being associated with several clubs, including Arsenal. But in reality, the connection between the Gunners and Coman might have been more smoke than fire.

Opinion:

In the end, Arsenal opted to bring in Sterling on loan, and Coman remained at Bayern Munich. While the idea of Coman joining the Gunners might have excited fans, Watts’ skepticism indicates that it was likely a long shot from the start. Given Coman’s situation at Bayern, it’s not surprising that his agents would explore different opportunities, but a move to Arsenal may never have been on the cards.

Looking back at the transfer window, it’s clear that Arsenal aimed to strengthen their squad to compete at the highest level. Although Coman didn’t arrive, the addition of Sterling could still provide the depth and quality needed on the wings. However, the uncertainty surrounding the Coman rumors highlights the challenges clubs face when navigating the transfer market. For Arsenal, the focus will now shift to making the most of the players they have and ensuring that they can mount a serious challenge for the title once again.

In my opinion, while Coman might have been an intriguing option, Arsenal’s decision to go for Sterling on loan seems more practical. Sterling has Premier League experience and can hit the ground running. On the other hand, Coman, though talented, might have required more time to adapt to the league. In the end, Arteta made the right choice by prioritizing a player who can deliver immediate results.
