Were Arsenal right not to replace Gabriel Martinelli with Nico Willams?

All summer, Arsenal fans were buzzing with excitement over potential signings, particularly a dynamic winger to challenge Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. Consequently, when the club eventually signed Raheem Sterling, the anticipation was palpable. However, before Sterling, Spanish sensation Nico Williams was also on their radar.

Williams had a breakout season in 2023-24, where he not only dazzled for Athletic Bilbao but also played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 24 triumph. Indeed, his performances were nothing short of spectacular; he contributed significantly with 8 goals and 19 assists, steering Bilbao to one of their best league finishes. Moreover, at the Euros, his flair and skill were instrumental, not just scoring twice but also creating numerous chances, cementing Spain’s victory.

Given his sterling performances, it’s no surprise that many clubs, including Arsenal, were eager to activate his tempting £47 million release clause. Nevertheless, rumours swirled about his high salary demands, which reportedly deterred potential suitors like Arsenal. Hence, when Williams remained at Bilbao, some fans felt a pang of regret.

Were Arsenal right not to replace Gabriel Martinelli with Nico Willams?

However, fast forward to this season, and the narrative around Williams has shifted. He has only managed one goal and no assists in eight games across all competitions. Therefore, there’s little reason for Arsenal fans to lament his decision to stay put. Instead, this season, Gabriel Martinelli, despite facing criticism, has bounced back with a goal and two assists, proving his worth.

The initial plan might have been for Williams to challenge or even replace Martinelli, but clearly, that would not have been an upgrade. We often forget the value of what we have when chasing after the new and shiny. Yet, every footballer goes through dips in form. Williams chose to stay, and in hindsight, there’s absolutely no cause for regret in Arsenal’s camp.

While the prospect of adding a talent like Williams was thrilling, Arsenal’s current squad, particularly with Martinelli’s resurgence, shows that sometimes, sticking with your assets pays off. Thus, Arsenal fans can breathe easy, knowing their team is in good hands without the Spanish winger.

Contrary to speculative rumors, Arsenal’s strategic vision for their midfield powerhouse, Thomas Partey, remains steadfast. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club harbors no plans to part ways with the Ghanaian midfielder as the January transfer window approaches. Instead, reports circulating within football circles hint at a potential new contract for Partey, underlining his critical role in Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup.

Transitioning from these rumors, it’s clear that Partey’s significance to Arsenal’s gameplay cannot be overstated. Having been purchased for £45 million, the midfielder has proven his worth, transforming into an integral component of Arteta’s vision for the team. His presence on the pitch not only enhances Arsenal’s defensive stability but also injects a dynamic force into their midfield transitions.

Further, contrary to what some might assume, the decision to extend Partey’s contract reflects a broader strategy aimed at fortifying the squad’s core. Arteta’s trust in Partey is evident, as he views the midfielder as a linchpin in his tactical framework. This trust is not merely based on current performances but also anticipates Partey’s growth within the team, projecting his impact over the next few seasons.
