Jamie Carragher’s View on the Title Race between Arsenal and Liverpool
Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool and England defender now recognised as one of the sharpest pundits on television, has suggested that Liverpool may hold the strongest starting eleven in the Premier League. However, he believes Arsenal could enjoy an advantage that may prove decisive if the title race extends into the late spring months.
His comments on Sky Sports highlighted how new signings such as Florian Wirtz have quickly settled at Anfield, while Alexander Isak is still finding his rhythm, and Hugo Ekitike has begun brightly. However, Carragher pointed out that Arsenal’s strength lies beyond their first team, as their squad shows quality across several positions.
His remarks come in the context of a rivalry that grows more intense each year. Liverpool pipped Arsenal to the title last season and forced the Gunners to finish second for a third consecutive campaign.
That frustration has only sharpened the hunger inside Mikel Arteta’s group, who remain determined to bring the Premier League trophy back to north London after a long wait. Meanwhile, under Arne Slot, Liverpool have flown out of the blocks this season and have claimed five wins from their opening five games. That start underlines the challenge Arsenal face if they want to break Liverpool’s grip on the league.
“You think with Wirtz coming in, Isak still hasn’t sort of fully established himself, that will come. He’s right about Ekitike’s capability. He’s made a brilliant start. But Roy just mentioned there about Arsenal’s squad. I actually think Liverpool have maybe got the best team, I would say, if you’re picking a best 11. But in terms of squad-wise, I think Arsenal’s squad is fantastic, and I do think they have a great opportunity this season of winning the title.”
Assessing Arsenal’s Chances:
Carragher’s remarks raise the question of whether Arsenal truly have the depth to turn potential into trophies. Liverpool proved their supremacy last season by finishing ten points clear of the Gunners, and that gap showed both consistency and resilience during crucial moments.
Arsenal showed resilience in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, where they recovered from two goals down, yet that point only reminded them of the gap that remains. Carragher’s suggestion about Arsenal’s squad being superior carries weight, but the squad will face tests across the long months when injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion often break title hopefuls.

Arsenal have responded to past disappointments by strengthening key areas, with Viktor Gyokeres providing another attacking outlet and a defensive unit that remains among the strongest in the division. Nevertheless, Liverpool still boast greater depth across every line of the pitch, from goalkeeper to forward.
That depth often decides the later stages of a campaign, especially when pressure builds. From my perspective, Carragher has a point about Arsenal’s improved options, but Liverpool’s proven record, relentless winning habit, and ability to cope with setbacks still make them favourites for the title. Arsenal may push hard, but Liverpool remain the standard to beat.
