Is This Contract Extension Going To Be Arsenal’s Biggest Mistake Of The Summer?

Calum Chambers has signed a new long term term contract for the Gunners. The Southampton academy boy can well be the solution of Arsenal’s defensive problems in the next season. Calum Chambers has joined the Gunners in the summer transfer window of 2014-15 season with a new four year deal. At the beginning of the career Calum Chambers was capable to play in both the right back and central back position. In the first half of the 2014-15 season Calum Chambers has performed really well for the Gunners.

Per Mertesacker was injured at the beginning of that season and in his absence Calum Chambers played in the central defense against Manchester City in the Community Shield match. It was a very matured and commendable performance from the young defender and also it was not in his natural position. Calum Chambers’ good performance in the first half of the season had helped him to be nominated for the Golden Boy Award in 2014. But in the second half of the season, Hector Bellerin has strengthened his position in the starting lineup of the Gunners. So, Calum Chambers did not get enough chances in that position. Also, Per Mertesacker was fit at that time; so Calum Chambers had to sit in the bench. His opportunities got more limited in 2015-16 season for the Gunners and he never seemed to recover from that.

At the beginning of the 2016-17 season Calum Chambers had gone to a season long loan to Middleborough. After that, in the previous season Calum Chambers returned to the Emirates. The English defender has got his chances in the Europa League games for the Gunners and his performance was really impressive in those matches.

Under the management of Unai Emery, Arsenal are going to play with a new style in the next season. In the previous season the Gunners have committed big defensive mistakes in the decisive moments of the match which did not allow them to finish in the top four positions in the League Table in the Premier League. In the next season, the Gunners are surely going to fight for the top four finish. Unai Emery has already completed three signings in this summer transfer window. The Gunners have signed Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno to strengthen their defense. Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been trying to inject the winning mentality in the team after taking the charge.

Laurent Koscielny is suffering from a long term injury and it is seeming that Shkodran Mustafi will not continue for the Gunners in the next season. So, we can expect a central defensive pair of Calum Chambers and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in first half of the season for Arsenal. It will be the high time for Chambers to prove himself in the big stage. If Calum Chambers performs well in the first half of the season, he will surely get regular chances in the starting lineup of the Gunners and we can expect that Calum Chambers can well be the solution of defensive problems of the Gunners in the next season.
