A statue of former England captain is set to be unveiled outside the stadium of Los Angles outfit next month. The 43 year old former England international played for the MLS side for six years from 2007 to 2012 giving them league triumph in 2011 and 2012. The England international arrived at the MLS based club, back in 2007 under the ‘Designated Player’ rule for those high-profile players whose salary might affect the cap of a club. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid man was the first among many to play in an MLS side followed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard.
Beckham, 43 is now a retired person who holds a 10% share along with his fellow class of 92 stars, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Neville brothers and Nicky Butt in National League side, Salford City. He is also the co-owner of MLS expansion club Inter Miami, which is set to join the league in 2020. Beckham featured 122 times for LA Galaxy and after winning the title in 2011 and retaining it in 2012, Beckham left the club and signed a short term deal with PSG before hanging up his boots once and for all at the end of 2012-13 season.
Life in the States was not at all easy at the start for Beckham. His early career at LA Galaxy was haunted by a Achilles problem which took half a season to cure. He was also criticized by the fans after subsequently agreeing for loan moves to AC Milan in 2009 and 2010 which meant missing part of the MLS season. Beckham’s move is widely credited for boosting the North American league’s worldwide reputation and overall quality. For the first time, players from Europe and elsewhere felt that they have a place to go and sensible football to play when they are above 30.
Beckham’s is believed to be present at the LA Galaxy stadium when his statue will be unveiled at the start of the MLS season 2019 when five-time MLS champion LA Galaxy start their campaign against Chicago Fire on 2nd March. The statue will be the first honoring of a former MLS player outside a stadium, which is a great achievement. FC Dallas also has a statue of their late owner Lamar Hunt outside the Toyota Stadium.
This is more great news for a player who has been a fan favourite during his time as a player in England and other clubs like Real Madrid as well. He has done a lot of big times with respect to his on-the-pitch antics and has been really famous off the pitch as well too.
He is not just known for his creative play but for his sense of fashion and style too. He has acted in movies too and has added another dimension to the sport of football, with his talents. This is something that will never be forgotten by the fans and this statue will now be a showcase of his excellence and contribution to the game as well.
The fans love the idea and this is truly further going to help Beckham cement his legacy among the footballing history and amongst the top sports’ legends too.
