According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Manchester United are in the race to sign Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Red Devils are in dire need of reinforcements and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he will be looking to purchase players in the summer transfer window to bolster his squad.

Manchester United were in dire straits during the early part of the season when Jose Mourinho was in charge of the club. The Portuguese manager instilled a very defensive philosophy into the club which wasn’t taken too kindly to the United faithful and with no results backing up the poor performances, the writing was on the wall for Jose Mourinho. The 56-year-old manager was given the sack in December and Manchester United turned to a familiar face as Mourinho’s successor and gave the reins to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season at least.

However, the Norwegian manager exceeded expectations at the helm when he was first appointed as caretaker when he took Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals in dramatic fashion with a stunning comeback against Paris Saint Germain. The Red Devils also strung together a bunch of positive results in the Premier League which lifted them up into a chance of finishing inside the top 4. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was then handed the job on a permanent basis but the results have not been the same and United have had a major slump over the past few months as they were dumped out of the Champions League and have now finally finished sixth in the League table.

Solskjaer is now aware that he has a mammoth task on his hands and he needs the summer transfer window to sell players and reinforce his squad as well. With Ander Herrera leaving Old Trafford, United will be running short of midfield options and the 46-year-old Solskjaer is keen to bring a top-notch central midfielder into the club in the summer. Even Paul Pogba’s future looks uncertain amid transfer speculation and interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid. Fred has not made the impact that United would have wanted from the Brazilian in midfield after his big-money move to the Premier League and Nemanja Matic also looks like his age is catching up with him as he has become sluggish in possession.

One target that United are scouting at the moment is Cagliari superstar Nicolo Barella, who has caught the eye of the English side over the last few months. The 22-year old broke into the first team back in 2015 and has gone on to feature 105 times for the Italian club, scoring seven times and assisting five more. The 20 times English champions are keen on the box to box midfielder as they have lacked dynamism at times in the centre of the park.

Barella is tied down with Cagliari until the summer of 2022 and is valued at around £43m at the moment if United want to snap up the talented young Italian.
