Match Report: Liverpool 2-1 Leicester City; As Reds Win Hard-Fought Contest

Liverpool edged past Leicester City on Saturday by a margin of 2-1. With this win, Liverpool registered eight wins out of eight matches so far in the Premier League. Somehow now it is seeming that Liverpool is having that Champions’ luck in this season. This was one of the most closely fought contests of this season in the Premier League. Leicester City will be so disheartened after this defeat as they deserve at least one point from this encounter.

The Reds came in this match after a hard-fought win against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday. Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp had to make a forced change in the starting lineup before coming into this match.

The Story Of This Closely Contested Game

Joel Matip was unavailable due to an injury; so Dejan Lovren made it to the starting XI of the Reds. On the other hand, James Maddison came back in the starting lineup of Leicester City.

It was a tight game overall in the first half. Wilfried Ndidi was shown a yellow card at the 30th minute of the match. Seven minutes later, Trent Alexander Arnold’s card was reviewed by VAR. Fabinho was also booked at the 39th minute of the match. However, just a minute later it was a brilliant through pass provided by James Milner which helped Liverpool to take the lead in the first half of the match. Sadio Mane received the ball perfectly and eased past Kasper Schiemechel. The first half ended with a scoreline of 1-0 in favour of Liverpool.

Liverpool Came Out On Top Against A Resilient Leicester City

In the second half, Leicester City tried their best to make a comeback in the match. Brendan Rodgers brought in Marc Albrighton in place of Harvey Barnes at the beginning of the second half. Caglar Soyuncu was booked at the 53rd minute of the match. Jonny Evans was also booked at the 69th minute of the match. Ayoze Perez came in place of Dennis Praet at the 73rd minute of the match.

On the other hand, Jordan Henderson came in for Wijnaldum at the 78th minute of the match. Divock Original also came in for Roberto Firmino at the same time. Fresh legs were injected by Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool was sensing that Leicester City would hit back.

The doubt of Jurgen Klopp proved true as James Maddison equalised the scoreline at the 80th minute of the match. The pass was provided by Ayoze Perez. Leicester City were looking confident to get at least one point from this match. Jurgen Klopp’s side desperately wanted to win the match at any cost. They tried to put up some clinical attacks at the end of the match. The defensive unit of Leicester City have done a bad mistake.

Sadio Mane was fouled at the injury time of the second half and VAR confirmed the penalty. James Milner took the penalty and converted the penalty successfully. Liverpool won the match by a margin of 2-1 at Anfield. This win will keep Liverpool at the top of the table for this week in the Premier League.
