Opinion: Why This Midfielder Did Not Fit In The Arsenal Squad?

The Story Back Then And Why He Failed

The season had come to its last quarter and the decision-making fixtures were taking place. The Gunners of England had started well in the previous season, though they were trailing at the fifth position back then losing too many important points. The Spanish manager Unai Emery had been impressive for the Emirates-based club. Emery had managed to rebuild the squad from the ashes where the veteran manager Arsene Wenger left the club. The transfer market wasn’t so active for the Gunners where they had gotten only one big name and that was Barcelona midfielder, Denis Suarez. Arsenal bought in Denis by a loan transfer.

Arsenal had signed Suárez back then from the Catalan giants Barcelona on transfer deadline day and were hoping to make the most of the deal. It took weeks of protracted negotiation with the Spanish league leaders to get the midfielder, though things did not eventually work out well for the north London outfit and the player as well.

Unai Emery had said that on-loan Barcelona young man “needs time” to adapt to playing in the Premier League. He had refused to comment on whether Arsenal will active the option to buy clause that exists in the player’s temporary contract with the club. Suárez had played previously under Emery at Sevilla, though he was yet to make his first start for Arsenal. He had only been restricted to four short appearances from the bench.

Other January signings like Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuaín and Newcastle new boy Miguel Almirón had already made big impacts at their new clubs. However, Emery had argued over the chances to be given to the Spanish midfielder and he was of the notion that the 25-year-old Suárez needed more time to adjust.

Emery said that he was working every day and improving and knowing them to step by step. Emery was at the training grounds back then and when asked about the club’s future and he said that his philosophy is an adaptation that needs time. It comes little-by-little and Denis would eventually grow in confidence step by step. He would also know his teammates in training and after playing matches.

For Emery, all the minutes Denis could get to help them were very important. Emery was thinking to give him some minutes, but after the injuries that followed, he couldn’t give him these minutes. Tomorrow is another opportunity.

However, Emery was reluctant to be drawn on whether Arsenal still intended to make the player’s move permanent at the end of the last season (which eventually didn’t happen). Though for him, it was so far away. The Spanish manager has made his thoughts straight as he said that their demands are very big demands. According to him, to work hard, to be with a focus for each match to show them and show you, the players, the coaches, that they can improve and they can be better every day. For Emery, the summer was too far away back then.
