Reporter Claims De Gea’s Contract-Extension Talks Backfiring, Could See Him Leave Manchester United

According to the latest reports, Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea is fuming after the club board decided not to increase his wage rate to the same level as Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez is currently the highest paid player in the English Premier League and as reported by journalist Duncan Castles, De Gea wants to be in the same wage-bracket.

Manchester United have had quite the turn in fortunes over the past few months after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from ex-United boss Jose Mourinho in December. Under Mourinho, Manchester United were in a dire straits as the football was bland and boring, something that the United faithful weren’t used to seeing from their club.

With a string of poor results at the start of the season, the Manchester United board finally decided to part ways with the ‘Special One’ in December. Solskjaer was appointed to take control of Manchester United until the end of the season to steady the ship but has exceeded expectations and now has put himself in line to be hired as a permanent manager.

There is happier news for Manchester United fans as the key man between the sticks David De Gea is now looking to sign a contract extension. The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford as top clubs in the continent would love to have De Gea as their last line of defense. The 28 year old has proved that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world ever since arriving in the Premier League back in 2011. De Gea will be out of contract with Manchester United in the summer of 2020 but a contract extension is being talked upon. However, the bad news is that the star shot stopper is now unhappy after speaking to the club officials on his wage deal.

According to journalist Duncan Castles, De Gea is looking to be made the joint top earner in the Premier League along with teammate Alexis Sanchez, but United are not willing to match his demands.

Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast stated, “There is been some reporting recently, as there has been it has to be said all through this period, that Manchester United expect him to sign a new contract, are confident that it will be done, They kind of upped the ante by briefing that they were ready to pay De Gea what he wanted, which is to be the best-paid player at the club, on a par with Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba. De Gea’s demands were that his performances, and since he’s been at the club he’s been Player of the Year four times out of five, I think he has been in the Premier League Team of the Year four times out of the last five, merited him being placed on a par with Sanchez and Pogba as top earner. What has happened since then is there have been discussions between the club and De Gea’s representatives, and what I am told is the club have made it clear that they will not match the terms Alexis Sanchez is being paid, the money they gave Sanchez to get him from Arsenal last January, which made him the best-paid player in England at the time.”

Castles went on to explain that this delicate situation is something that Manchester United may have to avoid, “This has of course not been taken well by De Gea and his representatives and I would say that the situation is now extremely delicate in the sense that this is not being perceived as a bargaining stance, this is being perceived as a definitive: ‘you are not getting the money, therefore you will have to accept less and we expect you to accept less.”
