The Transfer Saga That Might Cost Chelsea The Premier League Title

How It All Started?

Towards the end of the previous campaign, there were speculations going around that Diego Costa was unhappy and wanted to leave the Blues and head back home. Eventually, there were some differences between him and Antonio Conte, after which the attacker began to take digs at the Italian manager and things eventually fell apart.

Conte had stated that he did not want Costa at the club and that his time was all but done and he would be leaving Stamford Bridge soon.

The Progress-

Chelsea forward Diego Costa is likely to remain at Chelsea this season after a potential transfer did not take place in the summer transfer window. Turkish club Fenerbache interested in recruiting the Spanish forward on loan, it now seems unlikely that a deal will take place for Costa.

There has been a lot of speculation over Diego Costa’s future at Stamford Bridge. Costa had revealed earlier that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has not been interested in keeping the big forward at the club as he would not require him in the future after omitting him from his plans at the club.

Since their title win in May, Chelsea have had a rather underwhelming time. The Blues did not manage to acquire their prime targets in the form of Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United and also lost key midfielder Nemanja Matic to their Premier League rivals. While club legend John Terry left Stamford Bridge to play for Championship club Aston Villa.

Conte did, however, managed to bring in Alvaro Morata, Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko, who have all been renowned as decent players. But falling short on a forward, Conte decided to keep Costa at Chelsea.

28 year old Costa wanted a move to Spain to reunite with his former manager Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid. The La Liga side was banned by FA from recruiting players in the transfer market and can do so only after next year. So, Costa who is currently in his birth homeland Brazil finds himself still at Chelsea after many failed moves away from the London club.

The most recent was a move to Super Lig in Turkey, as Fenerbache were looking to sign Costa on a loan deal, but again there were issues. This time it was a financial problem which kept Costa from transferring to the Turkish giants. The Turkish transfer window closed on 8th September and the deal did not take place.

Fenerbache were willing to offer Costa part of his wages which is £150,000 a week deal, but the English champions refused to accept. Most probably, because they would have preferred to have Costa at Stamford Bridge after their poor transfer window in the summer.

Costa helped Chelsea win a couple of Premier League titles in three years, leading the attack, but was homesick and wanted to move back to Spain.

The Final Nail In The Coffin-

After months of speculations, it was confirmed that Costa would finally be leaving the champions of England and going back to Madrid, though it was still not certain when that would exactly happen. Now, it has been confirmed that the deal is complete and though the attacker can’t play till the new year, he has gone back to Spain and will train with his former club.

At a time, when the west London outfit have injury problems with Morata absent from the first team and results not going their way, a player like Costa could have come in handy. Also, the teams from Manchester are in top form and the Brazilian born striker’s goals could have made a difference, in some of the games that Chelsea did drop points this early in the season.
