Three Defenders Chelsea Could Sign, If The Transfer Ban Is Postponed

2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace haven’t been known for their defensive prowess in recent seasons, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka has emerged as one of the more sought-after young right backs in England. He was quietly excellent during the just-completed Premier League season, and his play has raised eyebrows around Europe.

Some believed Wan-Bissaka deserved a spot on the Premier League Team of the Season, but he wound up losing out behind Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool. Still, the South London club would do well to cash out on Wan-Bissaka while his stock is high.

Manchester United are a club that has reportedly registered interest in the player, but Chelsea should give him a look, as well. Azpilicueta is obviously entrenched as the first-choice right back these days, but the 21-year-old could certainly take the time to learn from Azpilicueta over the next couple of years. He may not break into the first team right away, but he’s young enough to where he can use the next few years to grow into the position.

Wan-Bissaka straight-up replaced Joel Ward as Palace’s No. 1 right back this past season, which is no small feat for a player with Wan-Bissaka’s minimal experience. It’s not a signing that would necessarily pay immediate dividends, but this would be a shrewd signing for Sarri if Chelsea are given the green light to spend money in the summer.

1. Luke Matheson

Wan-Bissaka would be a signing for the future, while Luke Matheson would be a signing for the distant future. Luke Matheson made his debut for Rochdale’s senior side back in September of 2018 as a 15-year-old. He became the club’s youngest-ever debutant in the process, and Premier League giants have already reportedly started to circle.

Matheson was a standout in defense during his debut performance in a 2-1 win over Bury that day despite the fact that he had just begun Year 11 at school that same morning. In addition to Chelsea, who have registered interest, Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton have also reportedly kept an eye on him.

Chelsea has a solid track record in recent years when it comes to developing young players, so perhaps that could give the Blues an edge if Matheson is ultimately given the choice of where to sign. One would imagine his time at Rochdale is quite limited if big-time clubs are already showing major interest.
