Again a young potential defender is between the tug of the two Premier League big guns. The Gunners are reportedly going head-to-head with Spurs to fight for the signature of Borussia Monchengladbach star Jannik Vestergaard. According to the rumours, The defender is wanted by both North London clubs this January after a number of impressive performances.
The 25-year-old was also in the list of West Ham’s interest a few years back during his time at Werder Bremen, but maybe their focus had been shifted elsewhere.
Vestergaard has been outstanding this season in the Bundesliga, helping Borussia Monchengladbach to crawl up to sixth on the table. Along with the major interceptions as a defender, he has also got 3 goals in his bag.
The 25-year-old centre-back has featured in every league game this term. And it seems thatThe Denmark international is now in demand of plenty of interests as clubs around Europe eye reinforcements this month. Vestergaard has scored once in ten caps for Denmark and helped his country to qualify for next summer’s World Cup in Russia.
According to an Italian outlet, along with north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, Inter Milan are also in pursuit of Vestergaard.
Vestergaard has only £15m releasing clause and is currently under contract at Monchengladbach until June 2021.
He joined Gladbach from Werder Bremen last June, completing a £10m move and his club would likely fight hard to keep hold of him.
But Arsenal, Spurs and Inter all have the cash to splash this month and could launch a bid.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has been suffering in the defensive half. The massacre in the FA cup exposed how weak their bench is! They have just signed a new defender, spending £2.2m to land Greek player Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina.
While Mavropanos is regarded as one for the future, Vestergaard could slot into the Gunners’ first-team fold straight away.
On the other hand, Spurs signed young centre-back Juan Foyth in the summer but if they can add more experienced Vestergaard this month, it would give a bit relaxation after Toby Alderweireld’s long-term injury.
So the both the Premier League club need a support in the deep where Vestergaard would be a tailor-fit match.
Though Gladbach sporting director has poured cold water on the transfer talk surrounding the club’s star defender.
Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl said, “There is absolutely no reason for us to let Jannik go.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s side is at fifth position in the Premier League table with 41 points just ahead of the Gunners, who are at sixth with 39 points. Both the sides are going through serious nervous times, where Alexis Sanchez may leave Emirates for a City move and Real Madrid may bid a humongous cash for the top scorer of 2017, Harry Kane!
Tottenham will face Everton in the Premier League, where Arsenal have come back quite brilliantly after the FA cup massacre. They managed to hold a respectful draw against Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final. They will encounter Bournemouth in the away game.
