Arsenal eye Bournemouth’s midfield engine but face steep £80m roadblock
Mikel Arteta wants more bite in the middle of the park. The latest name on the radar? Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook broke the news on social media, linking the North London giants with a serious swoop for the 22-year-old playmaker. It is easy to see why. The youngster has been brilliant down on the South Coast. Naturally, Arsenal aren’t the only ones watching. A proper Premier League transfer scrap is brewing.
Bournemouth are digging their heels in. They have no intention of selling their prized asset during this window. Instead, officials at the Vitality Stadium are pushing a lucrative new contract extension to tie him down. Smart move. Any new deal will likely include a massive release clause designed to scare off the big boys. Right now, they value him at a cool £80 million.
Arteta is clearly thinking about squad depth. Some of his older midfield options looked distinctly off the boil last term. He needs fresh blood. Whether the Gunners actually trigger a formal bid remains the big question, but the interest is concrete.
Why the £80m price tag makes no sense for the Gunners?
£80 million? Absolutely not. Not right now, anyway.
Bournemouth hold the cards here because Scott is under contract until 2028. They don’t need to sell. But paying that sort of astronomical fee in June feels incredibly reckless from an Arsenal perspective. He had a cracking season, granted, helping the Cherries secure a historic sixth-place finish. But that kind of money should be reserved for ready-made, world-class talent.
Arsenal have bigger fish to fry. The frontline needs upgrading first. Blowing the bulk of the summer budget on a rotation player would cripple their chances of strengthening elsewhere. Scott is superb at carrying the ball through the lines, but his goal output is still far too low. Besides, Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard are completely nailed-on starters.
Good deal? €90m star wants to join Arsenal in the summer
Maybe a compromise at £60 million makes sense. At eighty? No chance. Arteta needs immediate impact players to finally pip Manchester City to the Premier League crown next May. Scott is a fantastic long-term project, but Arsenal should walk away from this one if Bournemouth refuse to drop the price.
