Since a while, Real Madrid have been plotting a move to lure arguably the best goalkeeper in the world to join their side, but it seems their attempts will be in vain in the next summer as De Gea has claimed often in the past that he is more than happy with life in Manchester.
Rumours had sparked a long time ago that Madrid were looking at the services of the former Atletico Madrid keeper after his brilliant display in the Premier League for Manchester United. After arriving at the club in 2011, it took a few games for the Spaniard to get used to the English league but had since been a God-like figure between the sticks for United. In many ways, he manages to ensure that the ball stays out of the net due to his sharpness and quick reflexes on the pitch.
The 27-year-old took his game and ability to heights that many had expected as a highly hyped move to the English champions of that time. Ever since his switch to United, De Gea has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, three Community Shields and the Europa League. His magnificent performances have saved United from losses in various occasions and he is widely regarded as the number one keeper in the world by many pundits and fans. De Gea is also the first choice keeper for the Spanish national team and has made 25 appearances for the La Roja.
And now that he is willing to snub a move to his native land shows the dedication and commitment of the player towards the club.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been unimpressed with Keylor Navas’ ‘silly mistakes’ in goal and is on the search for a suitable replacement even if he does not manage to sign De Gea. The next best option is Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, who is also linked to a move back to Spain.
Courtois is also a former Atletico Madrid keeper blessed with astounding agility, reach and alertness just like De Gea. And the Belgian international wants a move away from Stamford Bridge back to the La Liga which gives the Spanish champions a better chance of recruiting him as a plan B.
However, Real Madrid president Fiorentino Perez has also issued a warning to De Gea, stating that the superstar ‘must’ join Real Madrid. A move back in 2015 failed after a breakdown in communications and negotiations between the two sides.
It is now reported that Madrid are willing to offer the Europa League winners £70 million to pen a deal with De Gea, but it also depends on the wish of the Spaniard who have to choose either legacy at Manchester United or begin a new one at the Santiago Bernabeu. What do you guys think? Which keeper is most likely to join Real Madrid, De Gea or Courtois?
