Match Report: Belgium At The Top Of The Table, As Romelu Lukaku Scores A Brace

Belgium have won a thrilling contest against Switzerland in the Group Stage of UEFA Nation’s League with a margin of 2-1. With this win, Belgium have gone to the top of the table in their Group in this competition. Both the sides have fielded a strong lineup in this big match in the Group Stage of UEFA Nation’s League. Both the sides are currently situated at the top of the Table in the Group Stage. Both the sides have won their respective match against Iceland in the Group Stage. Switzerland have won the match against Iceland with a six goal margin. On the other hand, Belgium have won the match with a three goal margin. So, Switzerland are having a slight advantage over Belgium ahead of this match.

The match was an away match for the Swiss side; so Vladimir Petkovic’s men were trying to get one point from this encounter at Brussels. Two experienced Swiss defenders were missing in the starting lineup; but they were the integral part of the Swiss National side in the World Cup. Akanji and Stephan Lichtsteiner were not present in the squad while Nico Elvedi and Fabian Schar have taken their place in the Starting XI of Switzerland in this match against Belgium. Otherwise it is quite a similar Swiss side that were playing in the World Cup recently concluded in Russia in this year.

On the other hand, it was also quite similar starting lineup of Belgium National side that have played against Iceland in the first Group Stage match. Jan Vertonghen is suffering from an injury and that’s why he will be out of action till December. Thomas Vermaelen has taken the place of Jan Vertonghen in the Starting XI of Belgium in this match against Switzerland.

In the first half, both the sides have created several opportunities; but neither of the two sides were able to break the deadlock before the half time mark. Belgium were the better side in the field but the Swiss defense were able to nullify the attacking threat of the attacking trio of Belgium. It was a fascinating tactical contest to watch out for the football fans in the first half of the match. Youri Tielemans was certainly the best player in the pitch in the first half of the match.

Romelu Lukaku has now scored 2+ goals in 8 of his last 18 games for Belgium:

⚽️⚽️⚽️ vs. Gibraltar
⚽️⚽️ vs. Mexico
⚽️⚽️ vs. Saudi Arabia
⚽️⚽️ vs. Costa Rica
⚽️⚽️ vs. Panama
⚽️⚽️ vs. Tunisia
⚽️⚽️ vs. Iceland
⚽️⚽️ vs. Switzerland

The second half of the match was really eventful. Romelu Lukaku has given the lead to the Belgian National side at 58th minute of the match. It was a brilliant move in the attacking third of Belgium started by Eden Hazard and finished by Romelu Lukaku. Dries Mertens and Thomas Meunier were also involved in the movement of the Goal. The match was in control of Belgium; but Switzerland came back from a goal through a set piece situation. Shaqiri provided a brilliant cross towards Nico Elvedi who headed the ball back towards the substitute centre forward Gavranovic who made no mistake to convert it into Goal. Just when it was seeming that the match would end with a scoreline of 1-1, Romelu Lukaku stepped up and gave the lead back to the Red Devils in this match at the 84th minute of the match. The match has ended with a scoreline of 2-1 in favour of Belgium.
