Match Report: The Real Reason Why Chelsea Lost To Wolves And What Needs To Change Now

Chelsea were beaten by Wolves in the midweek fixture of Premier League on Wednesday. It was a big defeat for the Blues in this season as they went down to the fourth position in the League Table. Chelsea collected 31 points in 15 matches so far in this match. Wolves also got 19 points in the same number of matches and they went to the 12th position in the League Table with 19 points in 15 matches so far.

Maurizio Sarri has made quite number of changes in the starting lineup of Chelsea from the match against Fulham. Andreas Christensen was in the starting lineup of Chelsea in place of David Luiz. Cesc Fabregas came in place of Jorginho. Alvaro Morata came in place of Olivier Giroud and Willian replaced Pedro in the starting lineup of Chelsea against Wolves. On the other hand, Ryan Bennett came in place of Romain Saiss.

It was an absorbing contest with both sides having their chances to take the charge in the match. However at the end of the day Wolves got all three points from this match. Chelsea took the lead in this match at the 18th minute when Ruben Loftus Cheek scored. Eden Hazard provided a beautiful ball towards the young English midfielder and his deflected shot went straight to the goal and Rui Patricio had no chance to save it. In the first half, Chelsea looked like the dominant side and they were playing good football; but they were not able to capitalize on their chances. The Blues were unable to increase the lead for more than a goal margin despite playing good football in the first half. The first half ended with a scoreline of 1-0 in favour of the Blues.

The things started to change for the Blues after the 55th minute. In the meantime, Alvaro Morata and Willian missed two golden opportunities for the Blues to increase the lead in this match. At the 59th minute of the match, Raul Jimenez equalised the scoreline for the home side. Morgan Gibbs White provided the ball towards the centre forward of Wolves. Willian lost the ball and Wolves took the full advantage of it. Kepa Arrizabalaga could have saved that goal as it was between his legs. The Spanish Goalkeeper has to improve a lot to be the best Goalkeeper of the Premier League.

Few minutes later, Diogo Jota made the scoreline 2-1 for Wolves. Doherty provided a brilliant ball towards Jota who was not marked by any of the Chelsea defenders. Diogo Jota made no mistake to put it into the Goal. Marcos Alonso had another bad game. Matt Doherty eased past Marcos Alonso quite a few times. Marcos Alonso was also shown an yellow card. Chelsea were not able to make a comeback despite bringing in Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Mateo Kovacic in the second half of the match. Chelsea will face Manchester City next in the Premier League. It is going to be really tough for the Blues to get a good result in that match with this sort of performance.

The Change That Is Needed

Just when you thought things were getting better, Morata has once again cost the west London outfit three crucial points, by missing an open goal. Apart from that Willian isn’t helping the cause either, though he did have a rather decent game.

Sarri will have to take the strong decision of selling the Spaniard soon, while the Brazilian needs to be rested for some time or played in the cup ties and other options should be utilized, till he is back in form once again.
