Arsenal Boss Still Confident Of Champions League Qualification, Will Unai Emery’s Side Be Able To Do It?

According to the latest reports, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed that he is still in an upward frame of mind that he can help the club finish inside the top four at the end of the season. The Gunners do not have the top four in their hands after the defeat against Wolves on Wednesday night and with three games remaining, it seems like anyone can occupy those remaining two spots.

Liverpool and Manchester City have locked horns with each other in a fierce battle to decide which club will be crowned champions of England at the end of the season. However, the battle for the other two spots in the top four is an extremely intriguing one with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in a congested competition.

Since Unai Emery took charge of Arsenal back in the summer of 2018, he has done quite an admirable job by replacing Arsene Wenger at the helm. The Spaniard took Arsenal on a 22 game unbeaten streak across all competitions and took Arsenal to fifth place in the Premier League table. The North London giants are also in the semi-finals of the Europa League and have the chance to go all the way and win the continental trophy. But Arsenal recently suffered a massive setback in their pursuit of a Champions League berth at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers when they lost 3-1 at the Molineux Stadium on Wednesday.

Reflecting on the game, Emery revealed that Arsenal did have their destiny in their own hands but the loss against Wolves will try to help them recover for the next few games. While speaking to reporters, the 47-year-old manager said that he is not losing hope of finishing for  Champions League qualification, “We lost in our hands the opportunity for fourth but we can also recover this opportunity. We have lost opportunities in the last two matches, losing to Crystal Palace and here (at Wolves) but in the last three matches we have played in the Premier League we have opportunities. Generally, we are now disappointed but we need to look at it all season. We lost this opportunity today but we need to prepare as best as possible for Leicester. Again, it is very difficult but hopefully, we can take something. We will be doing all we can for Leicester on Sunday to take the three points. The top four is the target, a difficult target, but we have a chance in this competition and also in the Europa League.”

Speaking on the loss against Wolves, which saw Arsenal 3-0 down in the space of 28 first-half minutes, with goals from Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota, Emery explained, “We did not recover quickly enough from their first goal but in the second half we had recovered our game plan and we were better. We needed to be calmer and try to impose ourselves on them but they were better than us and were stronger in their game plan.”

Arsenal are one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea and the Blues take on Manchester United this weekend.
